Requirements
  • Minimum 7 years of related insurance industry experience focused on construction risks.
  • Experience in underwriting construction insurance.
  • A university degree with a focus in business, engineering, or applied science is considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in understanding policy wordings and their impact on claims scenarios.
  • Proven analytical skills and a solutions-oriented approach to underwriting that drives profitable growth.
  • Experience working within a guideline framework, underwriting authorities, and protocols.
  • Demonstrated broker relationships with global, national, and regional brokers.
  • Ability to give and receive positive and constructive feedback respectfully.
  • Ability to manage internal and external meetings with professionalism and clarity while driving mutual accountability for results.
  • Experience with change management and adapting to new systems and processes.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Ability to collaborate across business units.
Responsibilities
  • Manage a large and complex portfolio of construction business and significantly contribute to the segment’s profitable growth.
  • Act as a senior technical resource and referral point for complex construction risks, helping shape underwriting strategy, account solutions, coverage negotiations, and profitable growth initiatives.
  • Collaborate with internal risk services, actuarial, and claims teams to achieve profitable growth through technical research and relationship building.
  • Contribute to regional new business goals by maintaining a quality prospect pipeline through targeted marketing, cross-selling, and account rounding with key broker partners.
  • Ensure proper risk selection, exposure review, profitable terms and conditions, file documentation, and adherence to underwriting guidelines and strategies.
  • Lead the ongoing development of underwriting talent through coaching, mentoring, referral support, and knowledge sharing while contributing to portfolio planning, broker strategy, and the long-term growth of the construction practice.
  • Coach, mentor, and train colleagues on underwriting, business development, negotiation skills, and other necessary skills to support their professional development.
  • Manage relationships with key brokers, clients, and prospects to provide service and gather market intelligence to expand products and services.
  • Collaborate on construction account solutions while highlighting differentiators in product offerings and value propositions.
  • Provide recommendations for regional growth strategies and broker and client plans.
  • Propose alternate solutions to underwriting processes to improve service and simplify the business, and act as an early adopter of new systems and processes.
  • Attend industry events, relevant seminars, and courses as part of continuous learning and development.
  • Perform other assigned duties and projects.
