Buc-ee's construction 'rocking and rolling' on first Louisiana store. KEY TAKEAWAYS: * Buc-ee's first Louisiana store in Ruston is ahead of schedule for a 2027 opening * Construction progress includes slab work, buried fuel tanks and upcoming wall installation * Project expected to bring 200 jobs and attract 15,000 vehicles daily * City investing millions in infrastructure upgrades to support development Ruston Mayor Ronny Walker said construction on Buc-ee's first Louisiana store is "rocking and rolling" with a partial slab already in place, fuel tanks buried and the first walls to be raised this month. "They're moving fast," Walker said April 6 in an interview with USA Today Network. Buc-ee's, a freeway phenomenon, officially broke ground last fall on its Ruston store on Interstate 20 off of the Tarbutton Road exit with officials announcing a target opening of April 2027. "They're definitely on schedule - or even ahead of schedule - for next year's opening," Walker said. A second Louisiana Buc-ee's in Lafayette has a 2028 target opening. Buc-ee's founder and CEO Arch "Beaver" Aplin III said his first travel center in Ruston will be a homecoming. Aplin, who opened his first Buc-ee's in Texas in 1982, was raised in Texas but spent summers working at his grandfather's general mercantile store in Harrisonburg, Louisiana, which he said planted the seed for business. "It's our first store in Louisiana; that's a big deal," Aplin said in a previous interview with USA Today Network. "This is where my roots are from, so we're super excited about it." Buc-ee's, with its toothy Beaver mascot, has developed a devoted following among travelers who consider the centers tourism destinations rather than just giant convenience stores with specialty foods, endless rows of gas pumps and pristine bathrooms. Every Buc-ee's has a wide variety of culinary delights like its famous brisket, fudge, jerky and signature Buc-ee's Beaver Nuggets, which are similar to caramel popcorn, as well as branded merchandise. Walker said the city has completed it's $8 million project to upgrade the Tarbutton exchange to accommodate Bucee's. "We installed the new traffic lights April 2 for the finishing touches," he said. He said the city will complete a $3 million service road project leading up to Ruston Junior High School on Tarbutton Road this summer to mitigate potential traffic problems during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up of students. Walker said he expects Buc-ee's to draw 15,000 vehicles a day. The mayor said his office is also getting inquiries "every day" from businesses that want to locate near Buc-ee's. Buc-ee's also owns 40 acres adjacent to its campus for which it will market out-parcels. Walker said the travel center is expected to employ 200 workers and generate commerce throughout the city, Lincoln Parish and the northern Louisiana I-20 corridor. "People will stop here in northern Louisiana at the Buc-ee's who have never stopped here before," he said.

Published April 7, 2026 11:51am EDT Image 1 of 4 SKYFOX5 photo The brief. * * Buc-ee's broke ground Tuesday on a new travel center in Forsyth, marking its fourth Georgia location. * The 74,000-square-foot site will include 100 fuel pumps and a variety of food and retail options. * The Monroe County location is expected to open in March 2027. MONROE COUNTY, Ga. - A new Buc-ee's is on its way to Central Georgia, with company leaders breaking ground Tuesday on a massive travel center in Monroe County, according to the company. What we know: The Texas-based chain held a ceremony at its future site along Rumble Road in Forsyth, about 20 miles northwest of Macon. The project marks Buc-ee's fourth Georgia location and its second in the central part of the state. According to the company, the new travel center will span about 74,000 square feet and feature 100 fueling stations. It will also include a wide range of food and retail offerings, from Texas barbecue to homemade fudge. Work on the site has already been underway for months, with land clearing completed and a large wall visible from Interstate 75. The location is expected to open in March 2027. Buc-ee's currently operates three stores in Georgia - in Brunswick, Adairsville and Fort Valley - with the Fort Valley location about 30 minutes from the new site. Wisconsin's first Buc-ee's is coming next year - and some residents are furious. A massive travel center from Buc-ee's is set to open in southeastern Wisconsin in 2027, marking the Texas-based chain's first location in the state and one of its most northern expansions yet. Not everyone in the state is thrilled about these plans, however - there was even a lawsuit filed in opposition of the new travel center. First Wisconsin location planned for Oak Creek. The new Buc-ee's will be built in Oak Creek, just south of Milwaukee along the busy Interstate 94 corridor near Elm Road. City officials approved the project after the Oak Creek Plan Commission signed off on plans for the development in 2025. My latest videos. The travel center is expected to open in early or spring 2027, making it Buc-ee's first entry into Wisconsin and one of the company's biggest steps into the Midwest market. (WISN) City leaders have welcomed the project, saying its location along a major highway could attract travelers and boost economic activity in the area. Massive store and fueling plaza planned. Like many Buc-ee's locations, the Oak Creek store will be significantly larger than a typical gas station. Plans call for a 73,000-plus-square-foot convenience store and travel center with about 120 gas pumps, as well as electric-vehicle charging stations. The site sits on roughly 27.5 acres of land purchased by Buc-ee's for about $7.5 million, with the project expected to employ roughly 250 workers once operational. Known for its oversized travel centers, the chain offers extensive retail space alongside food counters, snacks and branded merchandise. Mixed reactions from the community. While many local officials have promoted the project as an economic opportunity, it has also sparked debate among nearby residents. (This also happened in Colorado, and Buc-ee's abandoned building plans altogether in that case.) A community group filed a lawsuit attempting to block the development, citing concerns about traffic, noise and pollution. The lawsuit was later dismissed on procedural grounds, allowing the project to continue through the approval process. Despite the opposition, construction plans continue moving forward as Buc-ee's expands its footprint beyond the southern United States. If completed as scheduled, the Oak Creek store could become a major roadside destination for travelers across Wisconsin and neighboring states - which is good news and bad news, depending on who you ask.
