Requirements
  • Completion of high school, Grade 12, or equivalent.
  • Willingness to understand and support The Salvation Army’s mission and purpose in Canada as they relate to the position.
  • Ability to comply with occupational health and safety legislation and The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to provide a satisfactory original background check, including a Child Check when appropriate.
  • Food Safe Level I certification.
  • First Aid certification.
  • WHMIS and Universal Precautions training.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training.
  • Naloxone training.
  • Link 2 Feed Super User training.
  • Fluent spoken and written English.
  • A valid driver’s licence and clean driver’s abstract.
  • Ability to handle physical demands, including lifting and carrying items weighing more than 20 pounds.
  • At least one year of prior related experience, including experience working with multi-barriered persons.
  • Ability to perform loading and unloading vehicles, sort donated goods, use computers, maintain records and databases, and intervene in physical confrontations.
  • Ability to listen attentively and empathetically to clients, volunteers, and coworkers, provide directions or guidance, and maintain attention during computer work.
  • Ability to follow Universal Precautions and use provided gloves when necessary.
  • Ability to participate in workplace inspections and staff meetings.
  • Ability to maintain personal hygiene and follow sanitation and safety standards.
Responsibilities
  • Support community and family service activities focused on the well-being of individuals and families and assistance to clients, donors, and guests.
  • Provide general support to ensure that the Centre of Hope dinner program operates efficiently and mirrors the current lunch program.
  • Support tasks and activities in a team setting.
  • Facilitate spiritual care for staff and guests, including leading grace for meals at the Centre of Hope.
  • Support Centre of Hope programs, lunch and dinner programs, family services programs, third-party administration, income tax services, and the Christmas Campaign.
  • Ensure ministry objectives are consistently accomplished and that a mission focus is applied to program initiatives.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Answer the phone, make appointments, and complete necessary paperwork.
  • Schedule and organize volunteers for dinner service.
  • Receive, decline, sort, and organize non-monetary donations in accordance with food safety regulations.
  • Arrange for disposal of unusable items in accordance with policy when required.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace, including the intake office, food storage room, walk-in freezer, kitchen, washrooms, dining room, and exterior building areas.
  • Network with and refer clients to The Salvation Army, government, and community social service providers to coordinate resources.
  • Treat guests with respect and dignity.
  • Supervise fellow workers, students, and volunteers when required.
  • Assist with organizing special programs.
  • Assist in the kitchen as needed.
  • Supervise the dining room during lunch and dinner service when required.
  • Assist with fundraising as needed.
  • Maintain positive community relations and represent The Salvation Army through community network committees.
  • Ensure that safety precautions, hygiene standards, and Universal Precautions are followed.
  • Maintain sanitation and cleanliness throughout the kitchen, food bank, dining room, and food storage areas, including removing kitchen and dining room waste.
  • Ensure building security and compliance with safety standards when required.
  • Report environmental, health, and safety concerns or suggestions to the manager.
  • Work in the Centre of Hope environment and respond appropriately to challenging behaviours, emergencies, hazards, and physical demands.
Desired Qualifications
  • A diploma or certification in related subjects.
  • Experience in the field.
  • Immunization for Hepatitis B and vaccination against tuberculosis and COVID-19 are recommended.
