The Department of Management at the Kogod School of Business in American University invites applications for an open-rank, term faculty position starting in August 2025. All application materials are to be submitted electronically through Workday.
Qualifications. We welcome applications from scholarly and other professional backgrounds in line with the position needs. Preferred candidates will have (1) A Ph.D., MBA, JD, or related graduate or terminal degree from a nationally-accredited institution in Hospitality Management, Real Estate, Business Management, or other relevant fields; (2) 3-5 years of leadership roles within the hospitality or real estate industries (e.g.hotel management, property development, or hospitality consulting); (3) familiaritywith areas such as real estate development, hospitality management, brand management, property asset management, or international hospitality operations; (4) strong ties to the hospitality and real estate industries to facilitate internships, guest lectures, and career opportunities for students; (5) ability to develop relationships with hospitality brands, real estate firms, and other organizations in the ecosystem; (6) knowledge of business foundations such as accounting, marketing, finance, and data analytics as they apply to real estate and hospitality management; (7) awareness of current trends like sustainable tourism, ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) investments in real estate, and digital innovations in hospitality operations; (8) demonstrated ability to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in topics such as hospitality operations management, hotel development, property management, event planning, and general business management courses; (9) strong commitment to high-quality pedagogy with currency in teaching content, methods, and instructional technology; (10) experience designing and teaching online or hybrid courses is advantageous; (11) demonstrated collegiality, professionalism and a commitment to serving the school.
Responsibilities. Candidates are expected to design, implement, and lead a Hospitalityand Real Estate Management program.They are expected to be familiar with the scholarly basis of pedagogy and content in their teaching areas while contributing expertise in general management topics as needed. They are also expected to participate in department, school, university and professional activities.
Initial appointments are typically at the rank of Professorial Lecturer for one year and renewable subject to satisfactory review/performance and budgetary approval. Ranked renewable term faculty are eligible to be considered for promotion subject to the appropriate qualification and promotion requirements. The standard teaching load for term faculty is six courses per year. In compliance with DC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $100,000 - $150,000.
