Requirements
  • Ability to perform routine electrical maintenance tasks, including electrical repair on de-energized electrical circuits, and read project specifications, blueprints, and technical trade-related manuals.
  • Working knowledge of power and hand tools, electrician's trade equipment and materials, and standard safe work practices.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues and coordinate with other trades, work independently, follow assignments, adhere to department policies and procedures, and provide direction to Facilities Workers as part of a team.
  • Ability to read standard English text, communicate clear and grammatically correct information orally, and write simple English phrases for accurate reports.
  • Skill in performing basic mathematical calculations.
  • Working knowledge of electronic security systems, including surveillance cameras, intrusion detection systems, access control systems, panic alarm systems, and related equipment, including their operating principles and basic troubleshooting methods.
  • Ability to use power and hand tools and electronic testing equipment, and troubleshoot and repair de-energized electrical systems and equipment for malfunctions, damage, deterioration, or adjustment.
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships, prioritize assignments, complete projects promptly, report to work on time, and maintain regular attendance.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work involving standing, walking, climbing, crawling, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, reaching, and working in ladders, ceilings, mechanical spaces, equipment rooms, rooftops, confined areas, and similar service locations.
  • Ability to lift, lower, carry, push, or move tools, equipment, materials, ladders, and components weighing up to 60 pounds.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California noncommercial Class C driver's license.
  • Must be at least 18 years old and pass the required background investigation, physical examination, driving-record review, and color vision testing.
Responsibilities
  • Perform inspection, preventive maintenance, installation, testing, troubleshooting, repair, replacement, and documentation for fire alarm, life-safety, electronic security, access control, video surveillance, intrusion alarm, panic/duress alarm, and related low-voltage systems.
  • Troubleshoot problems systematically, identify defective equipment or wiring, and make repairs within the scope of the classification.
  • Communicate conditions requiring assistance from journey-level technicians, supervisors, vendors, or other UCLA trades.
  • Coordinate work with electricians, Facilities Management trades, UCLA departments, contractors, vendors, and University stakeholders.
  • Work independently or as part of a crew under the supervision of the Fire Alarm and Security Systems Supervisor and direction of a lead electrician or journey-level technician.
