Requirements
  • Basic written and verbal communication, computational, computer, and mathematical skills typically acquired through completion of a high school program.
  • Knowledge of basic occupational hazards and safety principles.
  • Knowledge and training in operating equipment and mechanical systems used during the work process.
  • Basic understanding of disposal regulations sufficient to determine the proper disposal site.
  • Aptitude in using mechanical, electrical, and hand tools.
  • Ability to use sewer maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret location maps and process diagrams.
  • Ability to review basic correspondence and simple reports in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • A valid Hawaii driver's license with CDL-B, tanker endorsement, air brakes, and no restrictions, or the ability to obtain it through on-the-job training.
  • A valid State of Hawaii Department of Transportation medical examination certificate.
  • Ability to work shift, weekend, and holiday schedules.
  • Ability to respond to emergency call-outs.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting of 50 pounds and other manual work under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to work in hazardous, unsanitary, and unpleasant conditions.
Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain the collection system, including cleaning, maintaining, and repairing sewer lines, pump stations, wet wells, septic tanks, interceptors, manholes, and related equipment.
  • Respond to emergencies as required.
  • Operate and perform general maintenance on collection-system specialty equipment, tools, and vehicles.
  • Organize assigned work and perform it independently or as part of a team.
  • Follow supervisors' or others' direction and adapt to change.
  • Accept on-call responsibilities.
  • Follow appropriate safety rules and practices.
  • Select appropriate alternatives for situations encountered on the job.
  • Consider the impact of work product on other employees in the work process.
  • Exercise tact and diplomacy when resolving mild conflicts or disagreements.
  • Convey technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Communicate information in written and electronic correspondence.
