Requirements
  • Must have or obtain a Certified Nursing Assistant or Personal Care Aide Certificate (80-hour) with Personal Care Aide Training within six months of hire.
  • Must be able to read, write, understand, and follow directions.
  • Must possess good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, and reach overhead as needed.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have no substantiated findings on the North Carolina Personnel Registry or Health Care Program and maintain this status during employment.
  • Must have a clear SBI record and maintain it during employment.
  • Must complete a two-step tuberculin skin test, with the first test prior to hire and the second test within two weeks of the first test.
Responsibilities
  • Provide assistance to residents with activities of daily living as needed according to the Care Plan, including toileting, ambulation, eating, transferring, bathing, dressing, and personal hygiene.
  • Assure that residents are dressed appropriately when in living areas of the home or outside the building.
  • Assist and teach residents self-help skills with activities of daily living to maximize their independence and freedom of movement.
  • Based on training criteria, perform personal care tasks; after completion of the 45-hour course, perform basic personal care tasks, and after completion of the 80-hour course, perform special health-related tasks approved by doctors' orders and signed off by a registered nurse.
  • Provide personal assistance as needed, requested, or required.
  • Respond to hand-bell or other signaling calls.
  • Assist residents with transportation when indicated by the Executive Director or Administrator.
  • Assist the Activities Coordinator in carrying out planned activities.
  • Help residents keep their clothes in proper order.
  • Assist residents with making beds as needed and make beds when residents are unable to do so.
  • Provide residents with a clean towel and washcloth as needed.
  • Assist residents with using, emptying, and cleaning resident equipment such as urinals, bedside commodes, bed pans, wash basins, and shower chairs.
  • Assure residents receive snacks and assist them at mealtime as needed.
  • Help orient new residents admitted to the home.
  • Notify the Executive Director or Administrator, Resident Care Coordinator, or Supervisor in Charge when a resident needs medical attention or has another change in status.
  • Apply rules and regulations pertaining to the use of restraints ordered by physicians in writing.
  • Report accidents or incidents to the Executive Director or Administrator, Resident Care Coordinator, or Supervisor in Charge.
  • Help maintain each resident's self-respect, personal dignity, and physical safety.
  • Work cooperatively with other staff and interact favorably with residents, their families, and visitors.
  • Maintain confidentiality of resident information and adhere to applicable requirements.
  • Apply the adult care home's accident, fire safety, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and emergency procedures.
  • Apply the Adult Care Home Residents' Bill of Rights and assist residents in exercising their rights.
  • Treat adult care home equipment carefully and use supplies appropriately.
  • Read and adhere to all adult care home and employee policies.
  • Participate in job-related continuing education as required by the Executive Director or Administrator.
  • Perform related duties assigned in accordance with licensing rules and the home's administrative policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed documentation in resident services, including progress notes, incidents, changes in condition, appearance, and behavior of residents.
  • Perform other duties required by circumstance.
