Requirements
- M.D. or D.O.
- Board certification in Clinical Pathology, Hematology, or Pediatric Hematology plus Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine.
- Ability to obtain medical licenses in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York.
- Ability to obtain a New York State Laboratory Director Certificate of Qualification.
- Ability to obtain a New York State Technical Director Certificate of Qualification in the Blood Bank Collection – Comprehensive category.
- At least 1 year of experience in clinical or laboratory aspects of transfusion and apheresis medicine beyond transfusion medicine fellowship training, including medical supervision of transfusion services and/or blood donor activities.
- Currently have, or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment, full medical licenses in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York; a New York State Laboratory Director Certificate of Qualification; and a New York State Technical Director Certificate of Qualification in Blood Collection – Comprehensive.
- Must have one available CLIA license slot for CLIA-licensed laboratories associated with NYBCe.
- Expert knowledge of state and federal regulations.
- Ability to provide medical directorship face-to-face, by phone or web meeting, or on-call to various groups.
- Ability to lead, direct, and mentor staff.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills for handling complex issues and situations with staff through executive leadership.
- Ability to communicate clearly and authoritatively in writing and verbally in individual or small-group settings.

Responsibilities
- Provide medical directorship for the technical and clinical operations of the blood center laboratories at RIBC.
- Provide support and guidance to collections staff, internal stakeholders, and customer hospitals.
- Support teaching, quality improvement, and continuous learning.
- Support management in making informed medical decisions.
- Develop and review technical and medical policies.
- Serve as the CLIA and New York State Laboratory Director and New York State Technical Director for RIBC.
- Cover the RIBC remote phone call for a week at a time, as assigned, for up to 26 weeks per year.
- Provide part-time coverage for donor-criteria questions, make decisions according to medical criteria, and respond to donor and hospital questions.
- Review and provide critical input on procedures, job aids, work instructions, and medical criteria for frontline staff.
- Participate in teaching activities, including occasional presentations on the NYBCe webinar series.
- Support planning and development of the annual Essentials of Blood Banking on-site learning program.
- Develop close relationships with clinical and frontline staff and provide expert consultation internally within RIBC and NYBCe and externally to hospitals.
- Ensure participation in quality-assurance activities and high performance of assigned programs and services.
- Spend 8 hours per week on-site at RIBC.
