Requirements
  • Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of relevant nursing care.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Certification through an accredited training course through the State of California and current certification through the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support.
  • Two years of nursing assistant experience.
  • An appropriate license.
  • Effective oral, written, and reading communication skills.
  • Understanding of the legal implications of patient care.
Responsibilities
  • Monitor and chart notes on subjects' health problems using a narrative format.
  • Observe signs and symptoms of illness, reactions to treatments or medications, and subjects' general behavior or physical condition.
  • Dispense medications and dietary supplements and take verbal or telephone orders from the physician.
  • Collect and record subjects' vital signs and chart collected research data into subjects' permanent medical records.
  • Perform routine blood and urine sample processing and administer qualitative tests on subjects' daily urine samples.
  • Maintain logbooks for transmission to the principal investigator or other staff instructions between shifts, and record study protocol deviations and errors.
  • Supervise subjects' consumption of water, meals, and snacks.
  • Supervise recreational and social activities for resident subjects and escort subjects to off-site outings while safely operating government-issued vehicles.
  • Conduct outside activities with study subjects, including daily walks, developing new activities, planning activities pertinent to the age and sex of subjects, and monitoring subjects during activities.
  • Prevent the introduction of contraband items into the research environment by performing routine room inspections.
  • Remove contaminated waste from the medical research unit and wipe down surfaces to prepare equipment for special procedures.
