Requirements
  • A high school diploma or current high school enrollment in good academic standing is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A valid work permit upon hire is required.
Responsibilities
  • Assist Dentists and other providers with chair-side or operating-room patient care, including passing and receiving instruments, retracting the patient's cheek or tongue, operating oral vacuum evacuation equipment, and applying water and air to the operative field.
  • Coordinate and operate the clinic or dental operating-room setting.
  • Perform advanced dental functions under New York State licensure.
  • Maintain a sterile environment and aseptic technique.
  • Maintain inventory of clinic equipment, instruments, forms, and supplies; identify replacement needs and assist with ordering processes.
  • Maximize room utilization by maintaining inventory awareness, stocking and cleaning operatories, and preparing dental units daily.
  • Clean and decontaminate instruments and maintain equipment; identify repair needs and perform repairs when applicable.
  • Complete laboratory work after patient visits, including pouring dentures, partials, and crown models, making bite guards, and setting up fluoride trays for preventive therapy.
  • Dispose of hazardous waste and chemicals.
  • Escort patients to and from operatories and provide assistance for special patient needs.
  • Follow clinical safety measures, including patient identification verification.
  • Anticipate equipment, material, and supply needs, including armamentarium, nitrogen tanks, operating-room carts, and other specialized items.
  • Review patient records to prepare for visit and procedure complexity and required time frames, and adjust patient schedules as needed.
  • Set up and use specialized equipment to document vital signs, including pulse oximetry during nitrous oxide or intravenous sedation cases.
  • Take intraoral, extraoral, and panoramic radiographs; anticipate diagnostic needs; and develop and mount radiographs.
  • Perform instrument sterilization.
  • Collect and enter data for quality assurance and departmental initiatives; perform quality-assurance testing and ensure compliance with quality-assurance expectations.
  • Support research activities by assisting with the collection of samples and biopsies.
  • Support new-hire training and orientation through shadow-training experiences or other technical training.
  • Perform other managerial duties as assigned by the supervisor in the absence of a Lead Dental Assistant.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of experience as a Dental Assistant or in an Operating Room environment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of dental terminology, procedures, and computer experience is preferred.
