Responsibilities
  • Design, build, validate, and maintain machine-learning, natural-language-processing, and generative-AI solutions for biomedical and pharmacovigilance use cases.
  • Develop tools supporting adverse-event intake, case triage, coding assistance, duplicate detection, signal prioritization, and trend analysis.
  • Engineer predictive models to identify emerging risks, patient patterns, and operational bottlenecks.
  • Translate complex scientific and business requirements into production-ready AI applications.
  • Define and execute a technology strategy for Global Patient Safety that embeds AI, machine learning, and agentic automation across patient-safety operations, analytical sciences, signal detection, and process scale-up.
  • Drive the architecture, development, and delivery of AI initiatives for pharmacovigilance platforms.
  • Integrate structured and unstructured datasets from safety databases, clinical systems, literature sources, real-world evidence, and external repositories.
  • Create staging schemas and mine varied data sources to uncover hidden trends and patterns and turn them into meaningful insights.
  • Build scalable pipelines for ingestion, transformation, and quality control of biomedical data.
  • Apply ontology mapping, terminology harmonization, and metadata strategies across MedDRA, WHO Drug, and related standards.

What is xenotransplantation? Xenotransplantation is putting an organ or tissue from one species into another. In the news it almost always means pig | human. Not sci-fi printing from scratch. A pig is bred (usually gene-edited so the human immune system is less likely to attack the organ), the kidney or heart is taken out, and surgeons sew it into a person who would otherwise die waiting for a human donor. Why they want it Human organs are scarce. Thousands die on waitlists. A pig organ is a proposed spare. Why it sounds "sus" * Animal viruses riding along (PERVs - pig viruses) * Immune rejection, even with edits * First patients have been last-ditch cases; some lived weeks or months, not a settled spare-parts aisle * Ethics: breeding animals as organ farms * "Organ printing" is a different pitch (cells + scaffold in a lab). Companies sometimes sell both stories on one campus. United Therapeutics angle They work on lungs/pulmonary disease and have been in the pig-organ / bioengineered-organ lane. Buying a big campus does not mean Merrimack is growing chimeric zombies. It means a firm that wants to industrialize replacement parts now has square footage. Today at 6:25 AM News Reporting STEWARTVILLE, Minn. - A new $110 million "Designated Pathogen-Free" facility is complete and ready to start raising gene-edited pigs to provide transplant organs for humans. United Therapeutics Corp., a $14 billion Maryland-based biotech company behind the first successful pig-to-human heart and kidney transplants, recently hosted a private ribbon-cutting to unveil its newly built complex in Stewartville's Schumann Business Park. Starzl Xenograft Production Facility in honor of the man who is known as the "Father of Organ Transplantation." Rodney Lam, associate vice president of Xeno Technical Operations with United Therapeutics, explained as he walked the 65,000-square-foot facility that it is now ready for pigs, with a capacity of 150 animals. A team of about 25 people will operate the Starzl Xenograft Production Facility, which raises the animals in pens that combine features of a high-end hog farm and a sterile clean room. Employees will wear protective suits while working with the animals. All of the equipment and products that enter the animals' clean area are sterilized with a shower of hydrogen peroxide. "Essentially, what we've engineered is a building within a building that is meant to keep it as clean as possible," he said. "Ultimately, we want to maintain a herd that is as clean and healthy as possible, so the pigs can become donors for human patients." The facility features its own labs and veterinarian clinic as well as two surgical units. A 3,600-panel solar farm next to it can produce up to 1.4 megawatts of electricity to help offset the facility's power needs. United Therapeutics conducted the first successful pig-to-human heart transplant in 2022 and the first pig-to-human kidney transplant in 2024. It is currently working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on clinical trials of xeno-organs with the goal of having pig-to-human transplants approved by the FDA by the end of the decade. In a world where the demand for organs for life-saving transplant continues to grow, United Therapeutics CEO and founder Dr. Martine Rothblatt is investing millions of dollars to eventually create an unlimited supply of organs. The Stewartville facility is one of three similar xenotransplant sites, with the others in Christiansburg, Virginia, and Houston, Texas. While UT's success is largely built on drugs to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension and a type of pediatric cancer, Rothblatt is committed to solving the need for organs. In addition to the xenotransplant sites, UT also has divisions working on regenerative and 3D printing solutions. "Dr. Rothblatt very much believes in multiple shots on goal," said Lam. In addition to the Starzl Xenograft facility, United Therapeutics paid more than $8.5 million in April to buy 200 acres of open farmland between Stewartville and Rochester along Interstate 90, U.S. Highway 63 and 90th Street Southwest with the goal of adding future facilities to support the nearby Stewartville site.

United Therapeutics presents positive Phase 3 lung disease study data. United Therapeutics will present four oral and four poster presentations at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2026, 28-31 August in Munich, and at the European Respiratory Society Congress 2026, 5-9 September in Barcelona. Late-breaking analyses from the phase 3 ADVANCE OUTCOMES study indicate ralinepag achieved clinical improvement in a lower-risk pulmonary arterial hypertension population and reduced clinical worsening in PAH patients with connective tissue disease, according to the company. Analyses from the phase 3 TETON program show nebulized treprostinil improved lung function, demonstrated a consistent benefit in reducing serious clinical worsening events, and showed a dose-dependent magnitude of benefit versus placebo in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients. Additional presentations feature interim ARTISAN data on parenteral treprostinil and preliminary PHINDER findings on screening for pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease. In June 2026, the company submitted a New Drug Application for ralinepag and a supplemental New Drug Application for nebulized treprostinil to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration; both agents remain investigational.

Liquidia drops 4% despite $170M Yutrepia sales beat, misses earnings by 2 cents

Liquidia shares fell more than 4% on Wednesday despite the company's lung disease drug Yutrepia beating second-quarter sales expectations. The treatment generated $170.4 million in sales, growing 31% and surpassing forecasts of $166.4 million. However, the company posted earnings of 74 cents per share, slightly missing expectations of 76 cents. Yutrepia, which launched in June 2025, competes with United Therapeutics' Tyvaso in treating high blood pressure in the lungs. Since launch, Liquidia has received approximately 5,900 new patient prescriptions, with more than 5,000 patients starting treatment. Over 1,100 physicians now prescribe the drug. Liquidia stock has gained 155% year-to-date and ranks second on the IBD 50 list of elite growth stocks.
