Requirements
  • An accredited bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or equivalent education and experience is required.
  • For the MLS Trainee pathway, the candidate must be eligible to take the Medical Laboratory Scientist or categorical certification examination from the American Society for Clinical Pathology within 18 months of hire.
  • For the MLS 1 pathway, the candidate must hold current Medical Laboratory Scientist certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology or an equivalent certifying organization, or certification from a specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division.
  • For the MLS 1 pathway, the candidate must have one year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee; up to one year of clinical-testing experience from a Medical Laboratory Science Program externship may count.
  • The candidate must be familiar with Immunology Laboratory procedures, quick-reference guides, departmental environment-of-care policies, workplace safety protocols, patient-confidentiality policies, and applicable standard operating procedures.
  • The candidate must be able to work independently, manage assigned workload, and seek assistance when needed.
Responsibilities
  • Perform clinical laboratory tests used in screening, diagnosing, and treating pathological conditions.
  • Perform assigned laboratory testing on patient, research, and proficiency-testing samples accurately and precisely using automated immunoanalyzers, automated immunofluorescence and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay processors, electrophoresis apparatus and scanners, immunofluorescent microscopes, a Magpix Luminex instrument, and an Euroimmun Immunoblot system.
  • Perform manual assays including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, radial immunodiffusion, line blot assays, cold agglutinin titers, viscosity measurements, and cryoglobulin and cryofibrinogen testing.
  • Perform subjective immunofluorescence microscopy for anti-nuclear antibodies, anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies, and other cytoplasmic antibodies on tissue substrates.
  • Use instrument-linked computers, Sunquest Laboratory Information System, laboratory medicine server systems, UW Medicine systems including Epic, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, MyChem, and MediaLab.
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance on Immunology instruments according to standard operating procedures.
  • Run quality controls according to standard operating procedures, evaluate results, and take appropriate steps when controls fail.
  • Troubleshoot instrument issues and interact appropriately with technical support services.
  • Assist others and work on projects when scheduled assignments are completed.
  • Participate in laboratory quality-improvement projects and method-validation studies.
  • Participate in laboratory staff meetings and review intralaboratory communications, including Microsoft Teams postings, meeting notes, and procedure or job-aid changes.
  • Enter patient and quality-control data into the Laboratory Information System and notify Client Support Services to fax results as needed.
  • Monitor reagent inventories and ensure supplies arrive in time for validation studies before clinical testing.
  • Monitor quality-control materials and ensure new supplies are checked out and ready for use.
  • Answer questions from other laboratories and providers about Immunology Laboratory testing services.
  • Train and teach new employees, medical students, DLMP residents, and Medical Laboratory Scientist program students.
  • Maintain a safe working environment in the laboratory.
  • Participate in technical competency-assessment and continuing-education programs.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
