Requirements
  • A minimum of seven years of liability underwriting experience is preferred, with experience in high-hazard, complex risks, or excess and surplus underwriting focused on medical professional liability highly desired.
  • A Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree is strongly preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of commercial excess and surplus lines risk, classification, pricing, coverage options, applicable statutory compliance issues, and corporate guidelines is required.
  • Ability to understand and execute strategic priorities, including pricing strategy, agent strategy, rate strategy, underwriting appetite, limit management, and mix of business.
  • Strong knowledge of the excess and surplus external market and demonstrated marketing and business development experience within the wholesale distribution channel.
  • Knowledge of individual account risks, specialty-specific hazards, rating, pricing, form selection, and industry-standard company forms is required for underwriting risk.
Responsibilities
  • Underwrite and manage a portfolio of difficult-to-place medical professional liability risks, focusing on individual and small physician-group professional liability risks with unique or challenging exposures.
  • Build and maintain a flow of new business opportunities and identify growth opportunities within new and existing production sources.
  • Develop risk pricing by analyzing exposures and claims experience, using pricing tools and worksheets, comparing similar risks, and underwriting individual account exposures within the assigned portfolio and authority level.
  • Achieve budgeted financial results for individual portfolios, including premium, loss ratio, retention, commissions, pricing, new business, premium collection, and expense management.
  • Identify and take corrective action or collaborate with the appropriate organizational area based on individual risk characteristics identified through broker reviews, large-loss analysis, and risk control.
  • Ensure compliance with underwriting strategies and regulatory requirements.
  • Remain current on legal and regulatory changes and claim development to contribute to unit product development and portfolio decisions.
  • Provide responsive service to brokers by delivering timely and accurate quotes and endorsements.
  • Manage broker development and relationships within a book of business.
  • Conduct new business development, risk analysis and assessment, coverage evaluation, pricing, and contract negotiation to maintain and develop a profitable portfolio of non-admitted primary liability risks.
Desired Qualifications
  • Strong preference for experience in the excess and surplus market writing physicians' professional liability or medium- to high-hazard medical-facility professional liability insurance.
  • RPLU or another related insurance designation is preferred.
