Requirements
  • The candidate must be a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • The candidate must be currently licensed to practice nursing in California.
  • The candidate must have at least three years of acute care experience.
  • The candidate must have at least one year of acute care supervisor experience.
  • The candidate must hold a current Basic Life Support card and maintain current National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale certification through the American Heart Association.
  • The candidate must maintain current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification through the American Heart Association.
  • The candidate must maintain current Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider certification.
Responsibilities
  • Provide administrative expertise and leadership in identifying and resolving patient- and unit-related problems using relevant resources.
  • Represent Administration on site during evening, night, weekend, and holiday hours and communicate with the Administrator on call as needed.
  • Coordinate nursing-unit staffing in collaboration with individual Unit Directors.
  • Monitor and assure compliance with safety, wage and hour, employment discrimination, accreditation, licensure, certification, reimbursement, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee the performance of nursing staff employees and contracted nursing staff in accordance with scope of practice and safe patient-care standards.
  • Assist with the selection, development, and ongoing evaluation of staffing-office personnel.
  • Assure appropriate patient-to-staff relationships with department directors to meet staffing productivity standards based on patient-care needs and population age.
  • Resolve problems involving patients, physicians, equipment, and facilities in a timely manner to prevent disruption of quality care.
  • Provide leadership and expertise to team members as a role model.
  • Notify the Unit Director, Administrator, and other department heads of incidents in a timely manner.
  • Provide shift-to-shift communication to maintain continuity of information and follow-up.
  • Maintain files for contracted personnel to meet Department of Health Services, Joint Commission, and other regulatory standards.
  • Document hospital operational activities concisely and in a timely manner.
  • Complete end-of-shift hour reports to maintain administrative communications.
  • Verify and record the hospital midnight census on the House report and record additional department census tallies at specified times.
  • Provide clinical resources through direct clinical intervention or appropriate clinical expertise.
  • Supervise patient-care and nurse-staffing systems.
  • Collaborate with case management staff to identify patient-placement and utilization needs.
  • Coordinate patient admissions and transfers into the hospital during all hours.
  • Coordinate staffing for after-hours specialty procedures.
  • Oversee staff assignments based on personnel competency.
  • Mentor and provide a learning environment for registry and contracted nursing staff.
  • Oversee the Patient Care Classification system records and maintenance.
  • Safely and competently oversee care in emergency situations.
  • Follow established procedures and protocols and use critical thinking to analyze problems, prioritize interventions, and take appropriate action.
  • Exercise sound judgment and decision-making.
  • Respond to all hospital-wide Code Blue calls.
  • Facilitate the on-duty employee work-injury program in the absence of the Director.
  • Coordinate initiation of the Hospital Incident Command System in an internal or external disaster.
  • Share information, perceptions, and feedback constructively.
  • Promote communication with clinical directors, managers, physicians, and administration to ensure patient-care needs and operational processes are addressed promptly.
  • Interact with ancillary departments to meet patients' needs and operational requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with physicians to support collaborative interactions.
  • Provide timely verbal and written feedback to the Director.
  • Make administrative rounds to each unit throughout the shift and address problems with appropriate follow-up.
  • Communicate with all departments to address destructive gossip and rumors in support of nursing administration.
  • Control costs or generate revenue while providing value to patients and the hospital.
  • Apply infection-control policies consistently.
  • Ensure standard precautions are implemented during patient-care activities.
  • Ensure appropriate disease-specific isolation practices by staff physicians, patients, and families.
  • Maintain behavior and telephone protocol conducive to positive relationships with patients, families, medical staff, visitors, and coworkers.
  • Advocate for patients, families, and staff as circumstances require.
  • Provide leadership and clear direction to all members of the healthcare team.
  • Serve as a resource to unit clinical coordinators in developing solutions to patient-care issues.
  • Challenge traditional practices and pursue positive change.
  • Perform patient-satisfaction rounding.
  • Address patient or family issues and concerns.
  • Assist with and interact in coordinating the plan of care.
  • Report appropriately to the Unit Director.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
