Moderna develops medicines built on messenger RNA (mRNA). Its products use mRNA delivered into cells to instruct them to produce specific proteins that can prevent or treat disease, with vaccines being a primary example. In practice, a dose delivers engineered mRNA into the body, cells translate it into a target protein, and the immune system responds or the protein modulates biology to combat disease. Moderna differentiates itself through its focus on building a whole mRNA medicines platform and in-house capabilities for designing, manufacturing, and scaling mRNA therapies, including rapid development and large-scale production. Its goal is to create a new category of medicines based on mRNA that can improve how diseases are discovered, developed, and treated, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

Moderna soars 402% as FDA approves flu vaccine and cancer treatment shows promise

Moderna's shares have surged 402% this year, driven by clinical and regulatory breakthroughs. On 5 August, the FDA approved mFLUSIVA, the company's flu vaccine, which proved more effective than existing options in clinical trials. More significantly, on 19 August, Moderna reported strong phase 3 results for intismeran autogene, its personalised cancer vaccine. When combined with Keytruda in advanced melanoma patients, it meaningfully improved recurrence-free survival. The shares soared over 100% on this news. The cancer vaccine success validates Moderna's mRNA platform beyond COVID-19 applications. Intismeran autogene is being investigated for other cancers, including non-small cell lung cancer, and is developed in partnership with Merck. Moderna maintains a deep pipeline across infectious diseases and oncology.

Merck dips 0.5% after 12.6% surge on positive cancer-vaccine trial results

Merck shares dipped approximately 0.5% to $151.39 on Thursday following a 12.6% surge the previous day, reaching a record close. The pharmaceutical company's stock jumped after positive results from a Phase 3 trial testing a personalized melanoma vaccine developed with Moderna. The 1,137-patient study met its primary endpoints for recurrence-free survival and distant-metastasis-free survival. The trial compared Keytruda alone against Keytruda plus intismeran in patients with surgically removed high-risk melanoma, with no new safety concerns identified. Merck and Moderna are also testing the vaccine platform in lung, bladder, kidney, pancreatic and stomach cancers. Keytruda generated approximately $8.4 billion in second-quarter sales, representing roughly half of Merck's revenue. The stock now trades 26.28% above its estimated fair value of $119.88.

Merck surges 12.6% as personalised cancer vaccine beats standard melanoma treatment

Merck announced its personalised cancer vaccine combined with immunotherapy Keytruda significantly improved outcomes for melanoma patients in a Phase 3 trial. The 135-year-old drugmaker's stock jumped 12.6% on 19 August following the news. The trial tested intismeran autogene, developed with Moderna, alongside Keytruda in patients with surgically removed stage IIB through IV melanoma. Patients receiving the combination stayed cancer-free longer and experienced delayed cancer spread compared to those on Keytruda alone. The treatment uses mRNA technology tailored to each patient's tumour mutations, training the immune system to target up to 34 specific genetic changes. It marks the first time an individualised cancer vaccine has shown positive results in late-stage testing. Keytruda generated $8.4 billion in second-quarter sales, representing over 50% of Merck's quarterly revenue.

Moderna shares drop 13% as investors lock in gains after record cancer vaccine rally

Moderna shares fell 13% in premarket trading Thursday as investors took profits after the biotech company's historic rally. The stock had more than doubled on 19 August following successful Phase 3 results for its personalised mRNA cancer vaccine, developed with Merck. The trial involving over 1,100 melanoma patients met its primary and key secondary endpoints, marking the first successful large-scale late-stage cancer trial for an mRNA therapy. Fresh analyst targets added to valuation concerns. RBC Capital raised its price target to $130 but kept a Sector Perform rating. Bank of America upgraded shares with a $170 target. Both remained below Wednesday's close of $174.38. Moderna reported a $782 million net loss in Q2 2026 and negative operating cash flow.

Moderna stock rockets 177% as mRNA cancer vaccine trial succeeds, Musk calls technology 'tremendous promise

Elon Musk endorsed mRNA technology on Wednesday, describing it as having "tremendous promise" and likening disease treatment to a "software problem" through artificial RNA. His comments followed a major cancer vaccine breakthrough by Moderna and Merck. The companies announced positive Phase 3 results for an individualised mRNA cancer vaccine — the first successful late-stage trial of its kind. The treatment showed significant improvement in recurrence-free and metastasis-free survival in melanoma patients when combined with Merck's Keytruda. Musk was responding to scientist Eric Topol, who highlighted the trial's success alongside progress in personalised mRNA vaccines for pancreatic cancer, triple-negative breast cancer, and non-small cell lung cancer. Moderna shares surged 177%, whilst BioNTech gained 21.96% and Arcturus Therapeutics rose 25.21%. Musk has previously promoted AI and synthetic RNA as paths to transforming healthcare.
