Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Two to three years of experience in medical billing and insurance is preferred.
  • The ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize in a fast-paced environment is required.
  • Strong verbal communication and listening skills are required.
  • Knowledge of computer systems, especially registration and insurance screens, is required.
  • Knowledge of Medicare, medical assistance, and other third-party payors is required.
  • The ability to work with patients of all ages in a courteous and professional manner is required.
  • The ability to tactfully work with patients with past-due accounts is required.
  • The ability to meet quality and performance guidelines is required.
  • The ability to maintain composure under stress is required.
  • Manual dexterity is required for using a telephone headset, calculator, and computer keyboard.
  • The ability to discuss insurance coverage, billing policies, credit concerns, and payment arrangements with patients is required.
  • The ability to verify insurance benefits, referrals, prior approvals, and pre-authorizations is required.
Responsibilities
  • Discuss insurance coverage, including usual and customary charges, Medicare and medical assistance availability, reimbursement options, clinic billing and credit policies, and payment arrangements with patients.
  • Verify and secure referrals.
  • Verify coverage and benefits before treatment.
  • Secure prior approvals and pre-authorizations.
  • Review and take action on bad debt, collections, and denials.
  • Maintain proficiency with insurance and billing issues and serve as a resource to providers and staff.
  • Prepare account action worksheets and submit them to Patient Accounting for charge corrections.
  • Enter and edit patient insurance coverage and demographic information when necessary.
  • Inform patients about the clinic's billing and credit policies.
  • Answer patients' questions about insurance coverage and other billing issues.
  • Respond to patients' verbal and written requests in a timely manner.
  • Maintain statistics.
  • Participate in Patient Accounting meetings and training sessions as appropriate.
  • Provide coverage at other Springfield Clinic locations as assigned.
  • Comply with the Springfield Clinic incident reporting policy and procedures.
  • Complete OSHA and Springfield Clinic training and accomplishments required by policy.
  • Provide customer service while adhering to Springfield Clinic's Code of Conduct and Ethics Standards.
  • Work in an office environment with frequent contact with staff and the public, telephone use, prolonged sitting, and some bending and stretching.
  • Perform other assigned job duties.
