POSITION DUTIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Provides planning technical assistance on a variety of land use planning projects. Reviews plans to verify compliance with City codes, ordinances, laws and industry standards. Creates detailed maps utilizing computer applications, and provides planning and zoning information assistance to the public.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:*
Position Specific Summary
The Planning Technician position at the City of Tucson’s Planning and Development Services Department assists with reviewing and processing of building plans and permits using established procedures to ensure quality construction in the community.
This position reports to the Management Assistant. This position does not supervise.
Duties and Responsibilities
Reviews permits by verifying contacts, contractor’s license, auditing approvals, and verifying conditions have been satisfied. Assessing fees, and limited issuing and closes out permits.
Assists with preliminary stages of permit and plan processing. Initiates review process by uploading documents into software to establish the workflow process. Determines appropriate case types and necessary reviewers based on project criteria.
Provides assistance to customers in person and electronically through a variety of methods. Responds to inquiries and complaints related to submittals. Consults with internal and external parties to advise on procedures, resolves problems, and explains actions required for permitting processing. Determines needs and arranges for appropriate staff assistance.
Assists supervisor in monitoring compliance with permit procedures. Communicates process issues to supervisor. Participates in process improvements. Ensures accuracy of information entered into the permit database. Makes corrections to permit and plan records as needed.
Completes code compliance review by referencing adopted City codes and plans. Approves permit applications to move forward and assigns permit case types under direct supervision of a plan reviewer, engineering associate, or planner.
Perform all other duties and tasks as assigned.
Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed in an indoor office environment.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
6 months post high school
Work Experience:
Two (2) years of directly related experience
License:
Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
At least one (1) year of experience in local government in duties associated with processing plans and permits for building permits, land development, zoning, plan review or related area.
Formal education, certifications, and degrees in a field related to city planning, building compliance, or permitting.
Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Full Hourly Range: $21.96 - 37.88 USD
The Full Hourly Range reflects the City of Tucson’s pay range at the time of posting.
