Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A current Health Information Management or coding certification through the American Health Information Management Association or the American Academy of Professional Coders is required.
  • Two years of hospital coding experience are required.
  • The coder must be able to sit for long periods, have normal-range visual and hearing acuity, and possess the manual dexterity to operate computer and office equipment.
  • The coder must be able to concentrate and maintain accuracy during constant interruptions, make independent decisions, prioritize duties, handle high-stress situations, adapt to workplace changes, and organize and complete assigned tasks.
  • The coder must possess written and verbal communication skills and knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
Responsibilities
  • Review and accurately interpret medical record documentation from hospital accounts to identify diagnoses and procedures affecting outpatient encounters, and assign appropriate International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Current Procedural Terminology, and modifier codes.
  • Assign hospital codes to varied patient classes, including emergency department, observation, and same-day care accounts.
  • Complete accurate, quality, and timely coding, charging, and account abstraction daily for assigned specialty areas.
  • Maintain and enhance coding knowledge through quality reviews, clinical in-services, coding seminars, internal meetings, reference materials, and updates to coding manuals.
  • Ensure accurate, quality, and timely review of data needed to obtain a clean bill.
  • Contact physicians and other necessary parties to obtain information required for accurate coding assignments, and communicate with other offices to facilitate billing.
Desired Qualifications
  • Graduation from a Health Information Technology or equivalent program, or completion of a medical coding certification program, is preferred.
