Requirements
  • An associate's degree and 7 years of experience in animal handling are required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three years of demonstrated leadership experience are required.
  • Strong attention to detail, interpersonal, organizational, customer service, and written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Ability to lift repetitively up to 50 pounds and work weekends and holidays when necessary is required.
  • Knowledge of computer software packages is required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct research support through overall management of the Gorbunova and Seluanov laboratories and supervision of staff and students involved in animal care and research activities.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, UCAR/IACUC protocols, Animal Resource policies, and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Oversee animal breeding and aging colony management, husbandry practices, staff training, and daily laboratory operations for all species, including weekend and holiday coverage.
  • Collaborate with UCAR/IACUC, Animal Resource, DCM veterinarians, Facilities, and research collaborators to support compliance, animal welfare, laboratory operations, training, and implementation of new technologies.
  • Supervise students and staff in providing care for research animals, ensuring compliance with regulations, approved protocols, policies, procedures, animal monitoring requirements, veterinary directives, and procedural practices.
  • Participate in the annual performance evaluation process for staff.
  • Ensure personnel receive training in animal husbandry, breeding colony management, approved procedures, and applicable policies and procedures.
  • Understand UCAR-approved protocols and assign responsibilities to students and staff accordingly.
  • Ensure animal health and welfare concerns are reported to supervisors, veterinary staff, and UCAR when warranted.
  • Maintain approved UCAR protocols, including original submissions, triannual renewals, and modifications as needed.
  • Work with UCAR and Animal Resources on compliance-related matters.
  • Ensure husbandry for all animals under the laboratory's care according to the approved satellite husbandry management plan, including weekend and holiday coverage.
  • Ensure experimental mice, including aging mice, are monitored according to the approved monitoring frequency.
  • Coordinate husbandry practices for naked mole rats, Damaraland mole rats, and degu, and collaborate with Animal Resources regarding special care needs.
  • Train and supervise graduate and undergraduate students, research technical staff, and post-doctorates on research animal procedures and practices.
  • Supervise laboratory staff in executing projects according to approved protocols.
  • Instruct students and professional staff in record keeping for breeding and experimental animal censuses, laboratory notebooks, chemical inventories, and hazardous waste disposal.
  • Design animal studies and collect and analyze animal tissues for use in assays.
  • Communicate with internal and external collaborators to learn new technologies and establish them in the laboratories.
  • Perform other assigned projects and job duties.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior experience in a laboratory animal facility is preferred.
  • Knowledge of animal husbandry and regulations related to animal husbandry is preferred.
  • Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification is preferred.
