Requirements
  • Working knowledge of materials, equipment, methods, standard safe work practices, and tools of the painting trade, including operational skills.
  • Working knowledge of paper, vinyl, and various special coatings; application and preparation; chemicals and solutions to remove coatings; drywall taping and patching; surface and object protection; and scaffolding.
  • Skill in performing arithmetic calculations to determine square footage of surfaces and areas, and estimating material and labor requirements to accomplish tasks.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with peers, subordinates, supervisors, administrators, customers, visitors, and outside agencies.
  • Skill in writing simple English phrases using correct grammar and spelling to complete accurate, comprehensible reports, and reading standard English texts to follow written orders and carry out assignments.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments.
  • Ability to operate and maintain High Pressure Low Volume spray booth equipment.
  • Knowledge of equipment, products, procedures, and methods required for finishing and refinishing wood, metal, and synthetic surfaces within a spray booth environment.
  • Ability to match existing stain and paint colors, properly prepare surfaces, and apply stains, paints, shading stains, and clear finishes.
  • Oral communication skills to obtain or convey clear, concise, and grammatically correct information.
  • Proficiency in modifying or adapting designs, procedures, or methods to make necessary alterations and modifications.
  • Satisfactory completion of a certified four-year trade-related apprenticeship program or equivalent experience and education.
  • Valid California noncommercial Class C driver's license upon hire and maintenance of the license in accordance with California Department of Motor Vehicles requirements.
  • Ability to pass the required background investigation, Live Scan background check, pre-placement physical examination, color vision testing, and satisfactory driving-record review.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and various shifts.
Responsibilities
  • Inspect and maintain painted exterior and interior painted surfaces, trimming, and fixtures of buildings and related structures and facilities.
  • Use premixed or custom-prepared paints and apply wood finishing to new and existing surfaces after appropriately preparing them.
  • Cover interior walls and ceilings of offices and related facilities with wallpaper or fabrics.
  • Operate and maintain High Pressure Low Volume spray booth equipment to finish and refinish wood, metal, and synthetic surfaces.
  • Prepare surfaces and apply stains, paints, shading stains, and clear finishes.
  • Evaluate problems on smaller projects and minor repairs.
  • Discuss jobs with the supervisor or lead painters to stay apprised of job progress and resolve job-related problems.
  • Submit completed work orders to the supervisor or lead painters.
  • Provide direction to semi-skilled or unskilled workers.
  • Maintain accurate hours for each job.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of power and hand tools and trade equipment.
  • Follow established safety procedures.
  • Clean up job sites and return equipment and tools.
  • Respond to off-hour emergencies and work overtime as required.
  • Maintain spray volume logs and Volatile Organic Compound logs.
