Requirements
- A current approved Alabama Board of Nursing Registered Nurse license or multi-state license is required, or the ability to obtain one before starting.
- Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support Provider training is required.
- A minimum Associate degree is required.
- Candidates must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
- Required within six months of the start date: applicable American Heart Association or American Red Cross certification.
- The role requires the ability to communicate clearly and accurately, delegate to team members and students, receive delegation, address conflict and stressful situations, use electronic mail, telephone, and texting, work in groups, meet time pressures and timelines, and perform structured and unstructured work.
- The role requires exposure tolerance for human body fluids, disease, infection, laboratory chemicals, hazardous materials, and cleaning solutions, with use of common protective and safety equipment.
- The role requires medium physical work, including lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects; prolonged standing and walking; reaching, standing, walking, kneeling, bending, sitting, stooping, and running in an emergency.
- The role requires coordinated finger movement and the ability to perceive temperature, texture, shape, and size with the fingertips.
- The role requires stamina for prolonged shifts and normal or corrected hearing and vision.
- Physical presence onsite is essential.
Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, and direct quality, compassionate care by maintaining professional nursing practice standards and creating positive therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
- Supervise LPNs, PCAs, PCAs/US, US, Ortho Techs, and other non-licensed staff.
- Assess each assigned patient on admission and on an ongoing basis, including physical, psychological, social, spiritual, cultural, pain, nutritional, functional, developmental, age-related, and discharge-planning needs.
- Plan, provide, and document patient and significant-other education after identifying barriers to learning.
- Evaluate and regularly reevaluate patient care and coordinate care planning with patients, families, providers, and other disciplines to achieve patient-centered outcomes.
- Assign and delegate nursing care to team members according to patient needs and team-member capabilities.
- Apply safety principles when performing care.
- Accurately document observations, care provided, and changes in the care plan.
- Provide accurate handoff reports and participate in unit-based huddles.
- Assist with performance-improvement activities by serving on performance-improvement teams, assisting with performance-improvement measures, and supporting and implementing necessary changes.
- Perform initial and annual competency evaluations per job class.
- Maintain performance, patient and employee satisfaction, and financial standards outlined in the performance evaluation.
- Perform compliance requirements outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- Adhere to DCH Behavioral Standards and create positive relationships with patients, families, coworkers, colleagues, and self.
- Perform essential job functions in a manner that ensures the safety of patients, visitors, and employees.
- Identify and reduce unsafe practices that may result in harm to patients, visitors, and employees.
- Recognize and take appropriate action to reduce risks and hazards for patients, visitors, and employees.
- Adhere to DCH Health System policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
- A Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is preferred.
