Requirements
  • Associates degree from an accredited school of Ultrasound/Sonography or completion of an accredited sonography program or minimum of a Certificate of Completion of a Hospital Based Program or an Associate’s degree from an accredited school of Radiology Technology
  • Six months to a year of on the job clinical experience and training
  • Basic life support certification required within six to twelve months after hire
  • For general ultrasound positions, registry eligibility or registration with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography in Obstetrics/Gynecology and Abdomen (which includes Physics board exam); upon hire registry-eligible technologists must attempt all three registries (Physics, OB/GYN and Abdomen) within nine months and complete all three registries within twelve months of hire
  • For dedicated breast center positions, registry eligibility or registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Breast or registry eligibility or registration in Breast Sonography through the American Registry for Radiologic Technology; upon hire registry-eligible technologists must attempt breast registries within six months and complete through either ARDMS (including Physics) or ARRT within nine months of hire
  • Must be able to operate and perform basic computer programs associated with record keeping in the department
  • Must demonstrate excellent human relation skills to interact with patients, physicians and others in challenging or sensitive situations, including verbal and written communication, problem solving and assertiveness
  • Must have a customer service orientation
  • Must demonstrate leadership and organization skills including the ability to work independently and take initiative within established procedures
  • Must demonstrate a positive attitude
  • Must be able to stand or walk for long periods, perform regular lifting of light-weight objects (twenty pounds or less) and assist with heavier tasks such as lifting and moving patients
  • Receives or escorts patients into examination area, reviews pertinent patient information, instructs patient concerning the examination to be performed
  • Positions patients to obtain and effect the results specified for diagnoses
  • Performs optimum diagnostic ultrasound scans using high frequency ultrasound machines in consultation with radiologist
  • Operates all equipment properly and with care, and performs maintenance and quality control; reports malfunctions or needed repairs
  • Performs first aid as required and assists in adverse reactions to contrast media or other emergencies
  • Observes sterile technique to prevent cross-contamination
  • Maintains cleanliness of procedure rooms and equipment
  • Maintains accurate documentation of patient and file information
  • Maintains appropriate supply levels in areas of responsibility
  • Demonstrates or oversees on-the-job training for student technologists and Ultrasound Technologists needing training for new procedures
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service when answering the phone
