Overview

The Associate Dean for Collaborative Excellence at Yale School of Medicine is responsible for managing the strategic deployment of resources and the coordination of activities across the Office of Collaborative Excellence (OCE) and engages with all YSM students, trainees, faculty, and staff. The incumbent will supervise a staff of three with the potential for future expansion. The incumbent will work in close partnership with the Associate Dean of Student Engagement and Development at GSAS, to ensure effective implementation of programming and alignment with the offices’ missions and visions.

The Associate Dean will develop and implement initiatives and programs that advance collaborative excellence within the Yale Combined Program in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS), a partnership between YSM, GSAS, and West Campus. These efforts will include recruitment and presentations at regional and national conferences, including professional association meetings. The incumbent will create professional and leadership development modules to support retention, foster belonging, and strengthen community. The associate dean will assist in data collection and evaluation for both OCE and BBS, using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE OFFICE OF COLLABORATIVE EXCELLENCE PROGRAMS: 30%

Oversee the execution of initiatives and programs that impact the mission of the Office of Collaborative Excellence (OCE) across Yale School of Medicine (YSM).

Direct the strategic allocation and deployment of OCE resources.

Support dissemination of information across OCE, organize and set the agenda for team meetings, and organize the logistics when hiring new team members.

Supervise the three Clerical and Technical (C&T) staff within OCE (SHM location). Provide guidance and mentorship when needed to ensure staff can fulfill the mission of the office.

Represent the Deputy Dean for Collaborative Excellence at meetings with executive-level university leadership and among external audiences and stakeholders.

Partner proactively, strategically, and collaboratively with key stakeholders including student engagement groups, faculty engagement groups, employee resource groups, and other stakeholders across the School and University.

BBS PROGRAM RECRUITMENT, DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION RESPONSIBILITIES: 50%

Work in partnership with the Deputy Dean for Collaborative Excellence, BBS leadership (Director of BBS, Assistant Dean for the BBS Program, and Faculty Director of BBS Collaborative Excellence), and the Associate Dean for Student Engagement and Development at GSAS, to develop a strategic framework for recruitment, retention, and professional development that aligns with both the mission of OCE and the goals of GSAS and BBS.

Design and oversee the execution of initiatives for outreach, with the goal of recruiting students who have the credentials to matriculate into Yale’s BBS program and who will advance YSM’s Collaborative Excellence mission.

Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with minority-serving institutions (HBCUs, HSIs and Tribal Colleges), rural colleges and local universities and colleges.

Work in partnership with the OCE Deputy Dean, Director of BBS, Assistant Dean for the BBS Program, and Faculty Director for BBS Collaborative Excellence, to reevaluate the current mission, structure, and priorities of the Yale BBS Development and Involvement Community (YBDIC) to ensure strategic alignment with OCE, GSAS, and BBS missions, along with optimization of efficiency and use of resources.

In collaboration with the Faculty Director, co-advise and mentor YBDIC fellows and committee members. Oversee the stewardship of YBDIC’s budget and administrative support.

Participate as a member of the BBS Executive Committee. Provide updates on initiatives, program development, and outcomes data. 

GRANT SUPPORT AND OUTCOMES EVALUATION 20%

Identify and apply for funding opportunities that align with the mission of OCE and YSM in collaboration with the BBS Program.

Develop quantitative and qualitative tools and metrics to evaluate initiatives and programs related to collaborative excellence, within OCE and BBS.

Collaborate with BBS leadership to advance training grant assessments Collect, analyze, and report on programmatic outcomes to capture BBS students’ experiences and perceptions of the quality of their training. Qualitative and quantitative methodologies may include surveys, focus groups, individual interviews, etc. (when appropriate and workflow allows).

Required Skills and Abilities

1. Demonstrated supervisory and employee relations experience which includes mentoring, sponsoring and training of staff and trainees.

2. Demonstrated program and new initiative development.

3. Management and evaluation experience for new and existing academic, career and networking programs.

4. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook and other related software programs. Excellent oral, written and presentation skills.

5. Strong analytical, research and organizational skills with the ability to manage decision making for multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced work environment.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

1. PhD preferred. Experience running pathway programs.

Required Education and Experience Master’s degree with a minimum of eight years of higher education experience working with students, faculty and university administration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
