Responsibilities
  • Regularly performs laboratory procedures in one or more of the scientific sections of the Clinical Laboratory.
  • As a specialist; performs all routine and other procedures.
  • As a float; performs all routine procedures. Correct procedures done and 100% accuracy within procedure limits, and turnaround as stated in the procedure manual.
  • Serves as a Supervisor in the following areas: Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Waived Testing, Chemistry, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Serology, Send-outs, Computer, Evening/Night Shift
  • Performs all supervisor functions as requested in a timely manner.
  • Is the technical expert in his/her specialty.
  • Reviews and documents results of CAP surveys in his/her specialty.
  • Evaluates equipment needs and upgrades.
  • Ensures staff is scheduled that are trained in all areas of the job.
  • Serves as a resource for the staff and physicians.
  • Performs projects as directed by the Laboratory Director in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Has trained back-up staff for all key functions in his/her section.
  • Able to assist in some key functions of the Laboratory Director in his/her absence.
  • Assures that the department is properly supervised when they are designated as the In-Charge CLS.
  • Performs necessary quality control procedures and maintains their records.
  • 100% compliance with QC protocols for running controls and accepting results.
  • The Director is always notified of significant out of control, discrepant or unexpected results in a timely manner.
  • Records are accurate and up to date.
  • Peer review programs are accurate and submitted on time.
  • Watches for trends in QC problems and takes prompt action.
  • Select, monitor and order supplies.
  • Supplies are ordered and inventory is maintained at optimal levels.
  • Emergency orders are kept to a minimum.
  • Supplies are stored to prevent out-dating, in an organized manner and with appropriate records of receipt and testing.
  • Performs and records instrumentation maintenance.
  • 100% compliance with instrument maintenance procedures.
  • All instrument calibration is kept current.
  • Trains staff in all pertinent maintenance functions.
  • Review records to assure all necessary information is recorded.
  • Watches for trend in instrument problems and takes prompt action.
  • Participates in training of new employees.
  • Evaluations are objective and accurate.
  • Counseling is done appropriately and immediately when problems occur.
  • Training is adjusted to meet the skill level of the individual.
  • Troubleshoots technical and other problems as they arise.
  • Troubleshoots with the help of the hotline.
  • Troubleshoots with the instrument manual.
  • Problems are discovered and corrected in a timely manner.
  • Performs other clinical and clerical duties as needed.
  • Demonstrates the ability and willingness to perform phlebotomy procedures on patients of all ages.
  • Demonstrates the ability and willingness to perform clerical functions at the reception area.
  • Regularly utilizes the laboratory computer for various aspects of daily work.
  • Familiar with all pertinent computer procedures and contingency procedures.
  • Verifies that all assigned work is completed 100% of the time.
  • Communicates with nursing and other hospital personnel, regarding laboratory procedures, results, etc.
  • Communicates in a clear, courteous and professional manner.
  • Takes a leadership role in problem solving with nursing, physicians and other team members.
  • Performs all functions of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in all areas of the laboratory.
  • Able to perform all duties and responsibilities of the staff in all area and on all shifts. Is able to answer questions of as the lead in all areas including computers and front office.
  • Researchers, evaluates and develops procedure for new methods.
  • Evaluations are objective and accurate.
  • Implementation is timely.
  • Complete documentation is kept on all changes.
  • Written policies are prepared.
  • Staff is trained on all new methods.
