Mach is a defense manufacturing company that builds munitions to help the United States win future wars. Backed by $85M in funding from top venture firms, our small lean team ideates, designs, manufactures, and sells cutting-edge weapons to the Department of Defense.
Mach Industries is seeking a GNC Engineer (Navigation Focus) to develop and refine advanced navigation solutions for next-generation autonomous defense platforms. As a key member of our GNC team, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing navigation algorithms that ensure precise, resilient positioning in contested and GPS-denied environments. Your expertise in sensor fusion, state estimation, and real-time navigation software will directly impact the performance and reliability of our unmanned systems in dynamic operational scenarios.
At Mach Industries, we build next-generation platforms that maintain an allied American edge. The future of warfare lies in decentralized autonomous systems, and we are committed to delivering scalable, adaptable solutions at unprecedented speed. As a GNC Engineer (Navigation Focus), you will work at the forefront of innovation, collaborating with cross-disciplinary teams to develop cutting-edge navigation technologies that enhance situational awareness, operational autonomy, and mission success in the modern battlespace.
Responsibilities:
Lead the development and implementation of advanced navigation algorithms for autonomous and remotely operated defense platforms, ensuring robust and precise positioning in GPS-denied and contested environments.
Design, simulate, and optimize sensor fusion techniques integrating IMU, GPS, LiDAR, vision-based navigation, and other aiding sensors to enhance navigation accuracy and reliability.
Develop and refine Kalman filtering, Bayesian estimation, and other state estimation techniques to improve navigation performance across dynamic mission scenarios.
Collaborate closely with guidance and control engineers to ensure seamless integration of navigation systems within the broader GNC framework.
Implement and validate real-time navigation solutions using software-in-the-loop (SITL), hardware-in-the-loop (HITL), and flight test environments.
Work with avionics and embedded systems teams to optimize navigation software for real-time execution on constrained computing platforms.
Analyze and mitigate error sources affecting navigation performance, including sensor drift, signal interference, and environmental disturbances.
Develop robust testing and validation frameworks for navigation systems, leveraging high-fidelity simulation tools and real-world field testing.
Stay ahead of emerging navigation technologies, including alternative PNT (Positioning, Navigation, and Timing) solutions, AI-enhanced state estimation, and quantum sensing techniques.
Ensure compliance with industry standards and defense-specific requirements for navigation systems, including resilience against jamming and spoofing threats.
Basic Qualifications:
5+ years of experience in navigation system development for aerospace, defense, or other mission-critical applications.
Strong expertise in sensor fusion techniques, state estimation, and error analysis for navigation systems.
Proficiency in developing navigation algorithms using MATLAB, Python, or C++.
Experience with real-time software implementation and optimization for embedded systems.
Deep understanding of inertial navigation systems (INS), GPS-aided navigation, and alternative PNT methods.
Hands-on experience with navigation sensors such as IMUs, GNSS receivers, altimeters, LiDAR, and vision-based navigation systems.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. A PhD is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with navigation in GPS-denied environments, including terrain-relative navigation, visual odometry, and RF-based localization.
Familiarity with defense industry standards and requirements for resilient PNT solutions.
Expertise in AI/ML techniques for enhancing sensor fusion and state estimation.
Hands-on experience with flight testing and navigation system validation.
Strong knowledge of navigation error modeling and mitigation techniques.
Experience with high-fidelity simulation tools such as Simulink, ROS, or Gazebo for navigation system development.
