As a Manufacturing Engineering Intern at Lexington Medical, you will spend the summer on a running production line that builds a surgical stapler, tracking yield, downtime, and cycle time, and owning one process improvement project from concept through implementation. You will troubleshoot alongside the operators and technicians who run the line, bring your own analysis to production support meetings, and present your results to engineering leadership before you leave.

About the Role
As a Manufacturing Engineering Intern at Lexington Medical, you will work alongside manufacturing engineering on an operating line producing AEON™ surgical stapling products. Day to day, you will monitor line performance, troubleshoot equipment and process issues in real time with operators and technicians, analyze process data for trends, and propose changes such as fixturing updates or workflow revisions. Alongside that, you will own one manufacturing improvement project end to end, aligning with Manufacturing, Engineering, and Quality as you go. Because all three groups work in the same building in Bedford, getting that alignment means walking down the hall rather than waiting on a meeting invite.
Responsibilities
- Monitor line performance metrics, including yield, downtime, and cycle time.
- Partner with operators and technicians to troubleshoot equipment and process issues in real time.
- Perform repairs and maintenance on custom production equipment.
- Participate in daily and weekly production support meetings.
- Assess current processes for bottlenecks and inefficiencies and analyze process data to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
- Generate solutions, such as fixturing updates or workflow changes, and present them to the larger manufacturing team.
- Implement approved changes by training operators, commissioning equipment, or making other line changes as needed.
- Own a manufacturing improvement project from concept through implementation and present the outcome to engineering leadership.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled at an accredited university in an undergraduate or graduate program in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a similar technical discipline.
- No professional experience required. Your resume should show a demonstrated ability to build and debug mechanical or electromechanical assemblies, whether from coursework, a project team, a lab, or personal projects.
- Comfortable working with hand tools, shop equipment, and production machinery on the floor.
- Able to read mechanical drawings and work from SOPs and written work instructions.
- Able to clearly communicate analysis and observations to engineering team.
- Available on-site in Bedford, Massachusetts, five days per week for the full term, June 2027 through August 2027.
Skills that are a plus:
- Comfort analyzing data in Excel or a similar tool
- CAD experience (SolidWorks or similar)
- Time on a build team such as Formula SAE, Baja, or robotics
What Success Looks Like
- You have an understanding of your improvement project and have iterated on potential solutions.
- You have aligned all stakeholders of your proposed change (Ex. Manufacturing, Engineering, and Quality).
- By the end of the internship, the change is running on the line and you have presented the impact it has had to the engineering team.
Location & Work Arrangement
This position is based at our headquarters in Bedford, Massachusetts, in the Greater Boston area, and is an on-site role. The internship runs from June 2027 through August 2027, a three-month term, on-site five days per week.
Salary Range
$25 to $35 USD per hour
