Requirements
  • Associate's degree in Nursing is required
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing is preferred, must obtain within 8 years of hire
  • Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing for the state of Michigan
  • BLS certification required by completion of core orientation
  • Critical care or Advanced Life Support as well as other certifications may be required for some Registered Nurses, unit specific
  • Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from various computer systems and equipment in order to set an appropriate plan of action
  • Must be able to constantly communicate both verbally, in writing and electronically
  • The job involves regularly lifting of bulky or moderately heavy weights (up to 50 pounds) and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks
Responsibilities
  • Manage the care delivery for patients in the organization throughout the length of stay to achieve quality outcomes and timely discharge by applying the nursing process of assessment, planning, diagnosing, implementation and evaluation
  • Coordinate the care provided by other professionals and delegate selected acts, tasks or functions within the scope of professional nursing practice
  • Provide selected aspects of physical care appropriate given the patient's level of acuity and complexity of care required
  • Document and communicate during each tour of duty the patient's response to care provided, consumption of resources and anticipated needs
  • Assess the patient’s physical and developmental needs, review vital signs, and document nursing history and age-appropriate needs/strengths
  • Analyze assessment data to identify patient problems and develop an individualized plan of care with outcomes and plan
  • Develop a plan that prescribes interventions to attain outcomes and coordinate discharge planning when outcomes are not achieved
  • Implement the identified plan and administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing techniques and policies, and provide patient education
  • Evaluate progress toward attainment of expected outcomes and document patient response
  • Engage in quality improvement activities and use results to improve nursing practice
  • Pursue ongoing educational activities to maintain knowledge and competency and participate in ongoing professional development
  • Engage in self-evaluation and peer review to ensure adherence to professional practice standards and guidelines
  • Collaborate with patients, families and multiple health disciplines to effect positive patient outcomes and provide patient advocacy
  • Incorporate ethical provisions in practice, preserve patient autonomy, dignity, confidentiality and rights
  • Incorporate research findings into practice and participate in data collection or research activities as appropriate
  • Consider safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact on practice in planning and delivery of nursing services, including appropriate delegation of tasks
  • Provide leadership in the professional practice setting and participate in unit discussions, meetings and committees
