Think of Us is a nonprofit research and design lab reforming the U.S. child welfare system through partnerships with government, lawmakers, and foundations to design and implement scalable, data-driven solutions at federal, state, and local levels. It centers the lived experiences of foster youth and families and uses technology, data, and design to address root causes such as poverty-related neglect, promote kinship care, and support youth aging out. Its Virtual Support Services provide housing, mental health, and employment resources, and its COVID-19 response helped families access over $50 million in resources and disburse $400 million in federal relief for former foster youth. Funding comes from grants and philanthropic partnerships, including a major $47.5 million Audacious Project commitment with a goal to raise $100 million.

What believers are saying

  • Hilton gave $1.53 million in May 2026 for federal foster care implementation.
  • House Ways and Means cited Think of Us in April 2026 bipartisan foster youth reforms.
  • VSS adoption in California and the July 2026 Texas kinship grant show active demand.

What critics are saying

  • $47.5 million Audacious funding still leaves a huge $100 million campaign unfinished.
  • Federal reform dependence ties execution to Congress, states, and agencies moving slowly.
  • If Chafee and kinship reforms stall, Think of Us becomes a donor-funded advocacy shop.

What makes Think of Us unique

  • Sixto Cancel's lived-experience leadership gives Think of Us credibility with foster youth.
  • VSS now serves California Kinship Navigator, embedding product into state infrastructure.
  • The 40,000-person lived-experience database turns qualitative insight into policy and design leverage.
