Requirements
  • A current Certified Nursing Assistant certificate is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • The employee must maintain licensure or certification as appropriate.
  • The employee must recognize signs and symptoms of abuse or neglect in adolescent and geriatric patients.
  • The employee must evaluate geriatric patients for age-appropriate behavior, motor skills, and physiological norms.
  • The employee must recognize the need for additional safety measures for geriatric patients, including side rails and posey vests.
  • The employee must maintain skin integrity and provide care according to the plan and direction.
  • The employee must recognize appropriate mobility limitations, including use of an abductor pillow, log rolling, and traction.
  • The employee must recognize patients' needs for reassurance, acceptance of body changes, and a non-judgmental approach.
  • The employee must demonstrate knowledge of physiological deficits associated with aging, including sensory, communicative, cognitive, and behavioral deficits.
  • The employee must know how to use restraints.
  • The employee must know how to position orthopedic patients, including total knee and hip patients.
Responsibilities
  • The Certified Nursing Assistant assists clinical staff with patient care and treatment in an acute care setting under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • The employee participates in nursing reports by receiving and contributing to patient status reports.
  • The employee prepares patients and patient rooms for admission, transfer, and discharge.
  • The employee provides morning care, evening care, and general care routines according to established nursing procedures.
  • The employee takes and accurately records vital signs, height, weight, and other applicable measurements.
  • The employee prepares patients for meals, assists with feeding, and distributes water and other nourishment according to patient needs.
  • The employee performs general care activities for patients in isolation according to established procedures.
  • The employee makes rounds, anticipates patient needs, and responds promptly to patient call lights.
  • The employee secures patients' clothing and personal property according to established procedures.
  • The employee assists with or transports patients as necessary.
  • The employee collects, labels, and transports specimens to the proper area in a timely manner.
  • The employee reports and records changes in patients' conditions or behavior.
  • The employee ensures accurate documentation on flow sheets.
  • The employee performs assigned duties independently and assists staff with more complex treatments and procedures.
  • The employee recognizes and performs duties that need to be completed even when they are not directly assigned.
  • The employee seeks guidance and direction as necessary.
  • The employee recognizes and responds to priorities in the patient-care process.
  • The employee maintains a clean and safe environment for patients.
  • The employee maintains assigned patient-care equipment and reports malfunctions to appropriate personnel.
  • The employee performs additional duties in different department areas as needed or directed by management.
  • The employee follows hospital and department policies.

  • The employee completes annual updates and ethics training within established time frames.
  • The employee completes general and departmental orientation within established time frames.
  • The employee attends in-service programs.
  • The employee demonstrates age-appropriate care for adolescent, middle adult, and geriatric patients, including feeding, morning care, changing bed linens, recording vital signs accurately, and ambulating patients.
  • The employee communicates changes in patient condition or behavior to a licensed nurse.
  • The employee provides reassurance and support regarding body changes and medical conditions, including the plan of care, prognosis, and discharge plan.
Desired Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • One year of acute care experience is preferred.
