Job Description
30% - Under the direction of the OMFS Clinic Manager, assist with managing the dental units as assigned. This task may include assisting with clinic flow and attending meetings. Performs on-call duties for the OMFS clinic. Responsible for being on daily clinic call, under the direction of the department Chair and Clinic Manager. Performs triage functions in three busy outpatient clinics. Assist in the completion of patient forms (i.e. FMLA, medical necessity, return to work). Orders, inventories, and stocks supplies of all OMFS clinics. Works as part of the OMFS Mayday Team ensuring that crash carts are stocked and readily available.
20% - Administers oral, subcutaneous, and intramuscular medications as directed by the surgeons within the scope of practice. Functions as scrub nurse and/or intravenous nurse in IV sedation cases in a clinical setting. Functions as a recovery nurse in post IV sedation cases in a clinical setting. Assist with all areas of patient care including transport/assistance to and from the waiting area as well as monitoring surgical patients to ensure their safety after receiving anesthesia. Maintain patient confidence and privacy by keeping information confidential. Ensure that drug and pharmacy monthly inspection logs are current and accurate.
20% - Assist surgeons in complex examinations and treatment for patients in a clinic setting. Assist other personnel, serving as a liaison between external facility and hospitals to coordinate patient transfers, and consults in all clinics, MUHA, Emergency Room, and COM. Ensure that patients have proper medical clearance and pre-surgical testing as needed. Works with surgeons to assist with post-op reports. Ensures informed consents are signed by patient and provider. Assist in operating room coordination with schedulers, patients, surgeons, residents, and hospital to ensure appropriate schedule time for surgical procedures. Completes and documents followups to outside agencies, as determined by medical staff to ensure continuity of patient care.
15% - Takes and records vital signs. Prepares the operatories for treatment and surgical procedures. Takes and processes digital x-rays and CT scans as required. Must have a working knowledge of all equipment related to this task. When needed, assist in the sterilization of surgical instruments. Follow all infection control policies and protocols set forth by MUSC COM and the clinic manager. Assist in training dental students on sterile techniques and care of instruments. Assist with the general cleanliness of this area. Other duties as assigned.
15% - Provides an elevated level of support to the clinic and serves as back-up to administrative support team as needed. Ensure OR and ambulatory clinic maintain optimal utilization while remaining cognizant of patents needs, insurance, and provider availability. Schedule or help facilitate pre- and post-op appointments with chosen providers. Assists in coordinating
"piggyback" cases with ENT, Plastics, Pediatric Dentistry, AEGD, etc. Provides support for provider correspondence, to include patient letters, work/school excuses, disability forms, etc. Performs additional duties as assigned by the Clinic Manager.

Minimum Requirements: Graduation from an accredited school of practical nursing and two years of related experience as an LPN. Positions in this classificaiton require licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing. Requires certification in Basic Life Support prior to the completion of general orientation.
