Requirements

Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive or episodic health histories and physical assessments of patients with acute, chronic, or potential injuries and illnesses.
  • Take thorough patient histories, including the chief complaint, vital signs, pain score, mechanism of injury, past medical history, and review of systems.
  • Perform physical examinations including range-of-motion testing, strength and manual muscle testing, neurovascular and sensation testing, palpation, special and ligamentous testing, and functional testing, and present cases to attending physicians with available imaging results.
  • Transcribe, enter, and execute standing orders at the supervising physician's direction within the practice agreement and scope of practice, including radiographs, magnetic resonance imaging, electromyography, computed tomography scans, ultrasounds, physical therapy, injection procedures, braces, laboratory work, medication, and physician referrals.
  • Provide patient education, answer questions, and instruct patients on rehabilitation exercises.
  • Fit patients with splints, crutches, braces, wraps, and other orthopedic durable medical equipment, and educate patients on proper use.
  • Provide proper information to the brace company for billing.
  • Perform wound care, gait training, and casting application and removal.
  • Remove sutures and provide dressing changes to postoperative patients.
  • Assist the supervising physician in preparing for and administering injections, including conducting timeouts, preparing supplies, and securing signatures on informed consents.
  • Complete surgical booking sheets before surgery at the attending surgeon's direction and serve as a liaison between patients, surgeons, and surgical coordinators.
  • Communicate with patients, staff, and providers regarding patient care and questions, and document in the electronic medical record.
  • Assist attending physicians with patient paperwork, including medical leave forms and workers' compensation documentation.
  • Help maintain an orderly and professional clinic appearance and filter clinic schedules based on provider-specific criteria.
  • Assist physicians and clinic staff with filing charges, billing, insurance authorizations, pre-authorizations, retro-authorizations, and appeals.
  • Assist with scheduling patient appointments and contact patients to reschedule appointments affected by clinic closures or schedule changes.
  • Answer patient questions regarding outpatient procedures, postoperative recovery, and rehabilitation protocols.
  • Serve as a preceptor, mentor, and/or supervisor for students observing, shadowing, and obtaining clinical experience in sports medicine.
  • Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.
Desired Qualifications
  • Board of Certification certification is preferred.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is preferred.
