Requirements
  • Typically requires a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry or Materials Science/Engineering and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience. In absence of a degree, 12+ years of experience. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for additional years of experience
  • Experience with using standard laboratory equipment (ovens, thermometers, calipers, and microscope)
  • Experience with design of elastomeric o-rings and seals
  • Experience with quality control of elastomer materials and o-ring
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
Responsibilities
  • Assessing materials based on conformance to specifications
  • Conducting hands on testing of materials using a variety of laboratory techniques and instrumentation
  • Conduct testing, maintenance, trouble shooting and interpretation of results using standard thermal analysis instrumentation including: TGA, DSC, DMA, TMA, Rheology, Thermal Conductivity
  • Conducting standard chemical analysis laboratory testing using a verity of instrumentation including: FTIR, SEM-EDS, GC-MS, LC, NMR
  • Method and test plan development
  • Leading various characterization and design projects
  • Following standard written protocols and utilizing a variety of databases
  • Reviewing material documentation and assessment of specifications
  • Engagement with subject matter experts and management to understand material usage
  • Consistent engagement with engineers, subject matter experts and management to provide project status updates
  • Travel to and engagement with suppliers to support production efforts and product quality control
  • Documentation and communication of results and findings
Desired Qualifications
  • Understanding of material safety datasheets and Military/Industrial Specifications
  • Demonstrated aerospace experience with elastomer type and other polymer-based materials in system level application/design and material characterization involving elastomer type and other non-metal materials.
  • Hands on experience using thermal analysis instrumentation and data interpretation in an aerospace industry setting.
  • Academic or professional experience with non-metal material design, application, and failure analysis
  • Understanding of Polymer Chemistry
  • Understanding of Systems Engineering
  • Experience in Analytical Chemistry and Instrumental Analysis, including Infrared Spectroscopy, Chromatography and Thermal Analysis (ie: FTIR, GCMS, HPLC, GPC, etc..)
  • Knowledge of data analysis, modeling and simulation, statistics, and various computational techniques for complex multi-variable problems.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, planning and time management skills
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal scientific communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and complete multi-disciplined scientific based projects including failure analysis investigations
  • Ability to write concise technical reports summarizing analyses
  • Knowledge of STK, MATLAB, or Python
  • MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
