Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED plus five years of experience in heating and air conditioning-related fields, such as heating and cooling plant operation, heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics, or HVAC maintenance supervision.
  • A valid HVAC Journeyman license.
  • A current and valid driver's license.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical.
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and hours beyond the normal schedule when operationally required.
  • Ability to work during inclement weather when required.
  • May require a Commercial Driver's License.
  • Ability to pass mandatory drug testing for this safety-sensitive position.
Responsibilities
  • Perform daily physical building checks and use the building automation system computer to inspect HVAC equipment in the assigned zone.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and replace pumps, air handling units, variable air volume units, fan coil units, boilers, variable frequency drives, rooftop units, dehumidification units, gas furnaces, heat exchangers, exhaust fans, makeup air units, variable refrigerant flow systems, ductless split systems, piping, valves, air separators, ductwork, registers, diffusers, kitchen refrigeration equipment, and cooking equipment.
  • Maintain commercial swimming pool pumps, filters, strainers, heat exchangers, chlorine tanks, and pool controls.
  • Replace compressors, air filters, belts, bearings, contactors, relays, fuses, and building automation components.
  • Review plans, drawings, and specifications for renovations and provide comments and recommendations.
  • Communicate with Recreation Center personnel, city employees, and citizens.
  • Provide life-cycle analyses of HVAC equipment and estimate costs.
  • Conduct performance appraisals for HVAC technicians.
  • Schedule and monitor contractors' work.
  • Attend pre-bid and pre-construction meetings.
  • Order and maintain repair-parts inventory to minimize HVAC equipment downtime.
  • Oversee, schedule, and direct a crew of three HVAC technicians located at the Virginia Beach Recreation Center and other assigned buildings.

  • Universal Refrigeration Certificate.
  • Master HVAC license.
