Requirements
  • Willingness to develop an understanding of and support for The Salvation Army's mission and purpose in Canada as related to the position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to provide an original satisfactory background check; Criminal Record Review Program clearance is required for all positions at Vancouver Harbour Light, and the ability to obtain federal Enhanced Security Clearance may be required.
  • Grade 12 or equivalent, such as a British Columbia Certificate of Graduation or British Columbia Adult Graduation Diploma.
  • Current PeerConnectBC Peer Support Worker Certification, or willingness to be trained.
  • Naloxone training, First Aid with cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Mental Health First Aid, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training, or willingness to be trained.
  • Documentation confirming compliance with the Province's immunization and tuberculosis control program under Residential Care Regulations.
  • One year of related experience working with women or female-identifying clients, including experience in an applicable community social services sector.
  • A high level of stability in personal recovery from substance use and knowledge of relapse prevention strategies.
  • Knowledge of 12-step recovery principles and models, recovery models, and support services.
  • Understanding of the needs, strengths, challenges, and opportunities for women in the Downtown Eastside, including substance use, mental health, homelessness, and gender-based violence.
  • Ability to provide a healthy, safe, non-judgmental space for clients accessing social services or residential care, particularly programs serving women or female-identifying clients.
  • Comfort and skill working with diverse populations.
  • Basic skills in Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Responsibilities
  • Monitor client activities and remain available for personal, practical, and moral support.
  • Help clients acclimatize to the environment, understand rules, and gain confidence in staff.
  • Attend in-house 12-step meetings, including Alumni Meetings.
  • Assist with after-hours intake procedures.
  • Support counsellors with follow-up on clients where there are direct concerns about mental health or well-being, including hourly checks, follow-up check-ins, and urine analysis.
  • Provide and facilitate a weekly Step-Work Group for clients in the Treatment Program.
  • Administer evening or morning medications.
  • Report concerning behaviour to Treatment Program Management and the primary counsellor.
  • Hold clients accountable to recovery principles and act as a role model by following a personal recovery program.
  • Maintain confidentiality of client information and knowledge of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
  • Assist clients in accessing outside resources, including 12-step meetings, SMART Recovery Meetings, and recovery-based events.
  • Inform and remind clients about rule infractions and ensure they are reported to the client's counsellor and Treatment Program Manager.
  • Ensure clients are aware of the client grievance procedure.
  • Monitor the environment and clients or residents for safety and security and complete regular status checks.
  • Supervise or work alongside volunteers to facilitate recreational activities for clients in the Women's Treatment unit when required.
  • Ensure program participants' movements are restricted to their department and approved areas.
  • Provide client orientation using the New Client Handbook and facilitate training around chores.
  • Make verbal and visual contact with each client during assigned afternoon or overnight shifts, conduct check-ins, and document all check-ins.
  • Remain available for unscheduled meetings with clients.
  • Complete essential documentation for clients in the stabilization unit and Treatment Program.
  • Maintain respectful and ethical relationships with clients and colleagues in accordance with policies and professional standards.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and comply with facility policies, procedures, and Salvation Army Standards and Review procedures.
  • Work cooperatively and courteously with staff, volunteers, visitors, and clients.
  • Pass confidential or safety-related information to the Director of Residential Programs, Treatment Program Manager, Treatment Assistant Manager, or Clinical Supervisor when it may endanger or seriously affect a person or the building's safety.
  • Consider and act on legitimate requests for assistance from colleagues.
  • Communicate requests for information or Harbour Light presentations from individuals or outside agencies to the Treatment Program Manager or Director of Residential Programs.
  • Participate in seasonal client or program activities when required.
  • Take precautionary measures and complete safety practices such as Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training, Mental Health First Aid, and universal precautions.
  • Participate occasionally in off-site activities with manager authorization.
Desired Qualifications
  • Further education in a related field would be an asset.
  • Lived experience with a 12-step recovery program is a significant asset.
  • Experience working with CAMS or another cloud-based client database is an asset.
