Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, Food Service Management, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • Three to five years of progressive professional experience in food service, restaurant or catering, or project management, with progressively increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to act as an effective change agent.
  • A record of successful collaboration and relationship-building, with the ability to manage through others.
  • Effective prioritization and problem-solving skills.
  • Strategic thinking and goal-oriented, results-driven work.
  • Excellent organizational skills, task prioritization, and the ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills.
  • A demonstrated customer service orientation and strong attention to detail.
  • The ability to manage expenses and work within budgetary guidelines.
  • Competency using Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
  • Rhode Island Food Safety and Bar Code certification, or willingness to obtain both certifications upon hire.
  • A records check satisfactory to Brown University is required as a condition of employment.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee the planning and organization of the Brown Dining catering division.
  • Lead managers, supervisors, and union employees while promoting collaboration, trust, and accountability.
  • Ensure relevant staff are TIPS and food safety certified and comply with University, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and other training requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with standards for operations, menu development, service quality, food safety, sanitation, and budget adherence.
  • Create and manage catering programs that increase community engagement, membership, and sales.
  • Analyze sales and revenue data to evaluate the success of projects and programs.
  • Develop program enhancements and cost-saving initiatives for Brown Catering.
  • Maintain a presence at events to ensure successful execution and guest satisfaction.
  • Partner with clients to create and define their vision for high-profile events.
  • Coordinate menu tastings.
  • Assign catering personnel to develop menus, order quantities, auxiliary service requirements, equipment lists, staffing needs, and other event details.
  • Estimate function expenses and provide them to clients.
  • Review menus with the Director of Culinary Operations.
  • Notify the Assistant Director of Purchasing of special requirements, alcohol needs, and floral needs.
  • Confirm all event details before events.
  • Review post-event paperwork to identify problems or issues requiring follow-up.
  • Solicit client feedback and follow up as appropriate.
  • Review consumption data and compile billing details.
  • Mentor, support, and lead managers through open dialogue.
  • Set standards and expectations and hold staff accountable.
  • Provide constructive feedback and serve as a positive role model.
  • Develop and maintain a cohesive, high-performing team by promoting trust, respect, and collaboration.
  • Develop and maintain strong internal communication systems.
  • Effectively manage conflict and build relationships with staff.
  • Maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Keep team members motivated through positive reinforcement, coaching, and accountability.
  • Train and develop managers, shift supervisors, and service personnel.
Desired Qualifications
  • Successful experience managing in a union environment.
  • Experience with catering or event-planning software.
  • Culinary knowledge and/or professional experience.
