New York builds 4-kilometer tunnel under the Hudson River.

New York builds 4-kilometer tunnel under the Hudson River. Friday, 07/17/2026, 4:34 PM A tunnel project in New York faces problems. The tunnel builders have to freeze part of the ground. In New York City, a new tunnel is to be built connecting Manhattan and New Jersey. The nature of the subsurface on the New York side complicates the project: part of the ground does not maintain its shape when heavy drilling machines dig through it. Therefore, the tunnel builders of the $16 billion project want to freeze the subsurface. The Hudson River project at a glance: * A new railway tunnel is to be built under the Hudson River * The tunnel will be about four kilometers long * The project costs $16.3 billion * It is expected to generate about $20 billion in value * Planned completion is 2035 Hudson tunnel needs 152-meter-long drilling machines. "Basically, it's like drilling through a giant ice cube made of earth," Jim Starace, head of project delivery at the Gateway Development Commission, told "Autonocion" magazine. The company responsible for the construction phase - a joint venture between Frontier-Kemper and Tutor Perini - plans to insert casing pipes into the ground and lay pipes inside them through which cold brine will circulate. This is intended to freeze the surrounding water. And through the then harder ground, according to the theory, the machines can drill better. This would solve the problem of constantly sinking soil that the tunnel builders currently face. Additional challenges include drilling through the "Manhattan Bulkhead" (a concrete structure that reinforces Manhattan's shoreline) and a variety of old structures left in the ground from earlier times. Four tunnel boring machines, each about 152 meters long, will perform the drilling in pairs. One pair will drill from New Jersey and start work later in 2026. The other pair, drilling from Manhattan, will not start before 2028. $20 billion in value. The planned tunnel is just one of several structures that together form the Hudson River project. Overall, it consists of three parts: * The construction of a double-track railway tunnel connecting New Jersey and Manhattan * The construction of a segment that allows the Hudson River tunnel to connect to New York Penn Station * Rehabilitation of an existing North River tunnel that suffered significant damage during Superstorm Sandy in 2012 The Hudson River tunnel project is expected to cost a total of $16.3 billion, which is approximately €14 billion. According to plans, the tunnel will be about four kilometers long, but the entire project will span 7.2 kilometers. It is expected to create 95,000 new jobs, including direct and indirect positions. Over the construction period, it is projected to generate about $20 billion in value. Planned completion: 2035. The goal of the mega-project is to make the national and regional rail network for New Jersey Transit and Amtrak passengers more resilient and reliable. Additionally, the builders hope that the tunnel will strengthen the local and national economy. Delays in the North tunnel. The Hudson River tunnel is also a historic milestone. No intercity railway tunnel has been built under the Hudson River since 1910. The old tunnel is meant to be relieved. Currently, there are repeated complaints because trains in the North Tunnel are frequently delayed.
