What believers are saying

  • NS and FEC expanded interline intermodal service in 2024, boosting terminal utilization.
  • Fort Pierce and Fort Lauderdale additions deepen FEC's Florida logistics network.
  • FEC's core corridor remains indispensable for freight moving between ports, inland hubs, and Miami.

What critics are saying

  • Judge stayed FEC-Brightline lawsuit November 2025, delaying commuter-rail control for months.
  • Brightline's arbitration fight and amended fraud claims drag FEC into prolonged contract risk.
  • If Brightline wins commuter access, FEC loses corridor leverage and pricing power.

What makes Florida East Coast Railway unique

  • FEC controls 351-mile Jacksonville-Miami corridor, rare statewide east-coast freight monopoly.
  • GMXT owns FEC, pairing U.S. Florida reach with Mexico-centered rail scale.
  • NS partnership adds Jacksonville steel-wheel interchange, expanding intermodal access to Midwest markets.

India tests AI cameras to prevent trains hitting elephants

India's Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has tested an AI-based early-warning system to prevent trains from hitting elephants. Deployed in Madukkarai, Tamil Nadu, the system uses 12 tower-mounted cameras with thermal and motion-sensing technology to detect elephant movement within 100 metres of railway tracks. When elephants are detected, the system automatically alerts forest and railway officials, enabling trains to slow down. A separate Distributed Acoustic System-based Intrusion Detection System is already operational across 64 kilometres of elephant corridors and 141 kilometres of railway sections in Assam, with India's East Coast Railway planning adoption soon. Field surveys have also identified hundreds of locations where bridges, underpasses or fences could protect elephants without requiring AI technology.
