Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • Computer experience.
  • Basic Life Support certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Integrative Agitation Management certification within 30 days of hire.
  • The ability to work tactfully and professionally with patients, family members, and hospital staff.
  • The ability to solve problems, multitask efficiently, and organize and prioritize tasks.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of the diversity of the patient population and treating everyone with respect and courtesy.
  • Required measles, mumps, varicella, and annual influenza immunizations as a condition of employment.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the efficient and orderly admission of inpatients and registration of outpatients while ensuring accurate patient information is collected.
  • Prepare materials related to admissions and registration processes and collect required deposits, copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
  • Greet patients promptly and courteously and direct them to appropriate areas.
  • Perform timely, accurate, and consistent patient registration, including pre-registration, prior authorization, and insurance verification.
  • Obtain accurate information to establish complete medical records and demographic and financial information, maintaining a registration error rate of 5% or less.
  • Process registration records and distribute the information to hospital departments.
  • Escort or arrange escorts for patients to patient-care units when necessary.
  • Provide information to patients and visitors and answer telephones professionally.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with external organizations and agencies.
  • Identify appropriate patient insurance for services to be rendered.
  • Obtain benefits, approvals, and other relevant information from the insurance verification system, insurance representatives, or carrier websites.
  • Explain insurance benefits and out-of-pocket expenses to patients and communicate coverage problems to patients and physicians.
  • Communicate case-management issues to the Case Management department.
  • Identify and resolve insurance-company problems before or after admission.
  • Obtain and document authorizations for elective or scheduled patients.
  • Participate in organizational and departmental goals, in-service sessions, and staff meetings.
  • Maintain organizational and departmental standards and comply with hospital policies, confidentiality requirements, and professional decorum.
  • Assist in orienting new employees.
  • Perform assigned Admitting Shift Lead duties when assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • An associate degree in a healthcare or business field.
  • One or more years of experience in acute-care admitting or registration, the pre-admission process, insurance verification, or clerical work in a healthcare setting.
  • Working knowledge of patient admissions, pre-admissions, insurance verification, and customer service.
