Requirements
- The candidate must be ordained, commissioned, or credentialed according to the practices of an organized religious group.
- The candidate must have at least one year of experience in pastoral care in a medical, educational, or religious agency or institution.
- The candidate must have a minimum of a two-year degree in the pastoral or another applicable field.
- The candidate should have previous experience in a pastoral field, preferably healthcare-related.
- The candidate must demonstrate commitment to the hospice philosophy of care.
- The candidate must be able to work weekends, nights, and on call as needed.
Responsibilities
- Complete a spiritual assessment within five days of each patient and family admission to hospice and write a timely care plan appropriate to their needs.
- Provide spiritual and religious support and services according to the wishes and beliefs of the patient and family and the plan of care.
- Assist patients and families in contacting their own clergy, priest, rabbi, or other religious leader when appropriate, and advise that person of the patient’s situation.
- Serve as liaison to the patient’s or family’s community of faith and advise their clergy or other religious leader about issues related to the patient’s terminal illness when desired.
- Document the provision of care by community clergy and lay persons.
- Attend interdisciplinary team meetings and participate in establishing and reviewing plans of care for patients and families.
- Network with community clergy to provide information about hospice.
- Participate in developing and enhancing hospice spiritual and religious support services with community clergy and other members of the hospice interdisciplinary team.
- Complete required documentation in a timely manner according to Good Shepherd Hospice policies and procedures.
- Offer support to staff regarding loss and patient or family issues.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient and family status.
- Assume responsibility for bereavement services as needed.
