Requirements
  • A minimum of 6–8 years of experience with Numerical Control machines in a manufacturing or machine shop.
  • Ability to work with little supervision and perform routine work without instructions.
  • Ability to follow detailed operation process planning and written or verbal instructions.
  • Solid understanding of Numerical Control programs and ability to read and understand machine code.
  • Ability to read and comprehend engineering drawings and blueprints.
  • Solid and advanced mathematics skills.
  • Ability to work in a machine shop environment.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in manufacturing components.
  • Ability to work effectively with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to lift parts, tools, and fixtures weighing up to 35 pounds.
  • Ability to work in an environment with extreme heat, cold, and noise.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, talk, hear, reach, grasp, squeeze, handle tools or controls, and perform repetitive elbow and wrist movements as required.
  • Ability to crouch, kneel, bend, reach above shoulder height, and adjust focus for close vision.
  • Ability to work near moving mechanical parts and walk on a manufacturing shop floor.
  • Ability to wear required protective clothing, including steel-toe shoes and safety glasses.
  • Ability to remain available during off-schedule hours under the On-Call Policy.
  • Successful completion of a background check and applicable medical surveillance requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Operate Numerical Control machine tools in a cellular environment, including lathes and millers, to manufacture metal or plastic components.
  • Operate multiple machines concurrently as needed, including lathes, millers, and electrical discharge machining equipment.
  • Operate the machine controller to electronically download part program files.
  • Perform work from operation and planning packages, including process sheets, tooling lists, setup sheets, program code, and blueprints.
  • Convert, edit, and add lines of code to programs as required.
  • Perform minor to complex setups, including changing miller fixtures, changing lathe and miller tool holders, and making electronic tooling offsets.
  • Adjust machinery independently to produce parts that meet drawing dimensions and close critical tolerances across various material types.
  • Inspect work, perform quality checks, and record statistical process control data manually or electronically.
  • Adjust tooling, offsets, feeds, and speeds to produce parts within specifications.
  • Cross-check other cell operators' work during first-piece inspection and advise them of quality issues.
  • Check completed work using inspection tools, gauges, micrometers, and indicators, with quality control inspection as needed.
  • Deburr parts; perform subassembly work; press pins or faces into fabricated components; and mark, etch, stamp, or engrave parts as needed.
  • Perform other manufacturing support functions as needed.
  • Train other operators in cell setup and operation as required.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work area and follow machine shop safety policies and procedures.
  • Support Chesterton quality policies and production goals.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities and provide improvement suggestions.
  • Remain available during off-schedule hours when required by business needs.
