Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree with preferred field of study in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, science, or engineering is required.
  • A safety or health-related master's degree or at least one recognized professional designation such as Certified Safety Professional, Associate in Risk Management, or Certified Industrial Hygienist is required.
  • At least 5 years of safety and health experience, including a proven track record coordinating service to large and multi-location accounts, is required.
  • Strong ability to obtain, analyze, and report loss data that defines the significance of loss problems and identifies specific safety and health service priorities.
  • Knowledge of workers' compensation insurance, including experience modification, underwriting, loss-sensitive plans, and claims practices.
  • Working knowledge of return-to-work program features and benefits.
  • Strong understanding of key performance measures for a workers' compensation insurance carrier and how the Safety & Health department affects financial performance.
  • Basic understanding of occupational medicine provider network features and benefits.
  • Effective communication, sales, and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other common business software.
  • Ability to learn and use proprietary Zenith systems.
  • A driver's license in good standing is required.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct assigned underwriting surveys at prospect and policyholder locations to define business operations, key employee injury and illness exposures, and controls.
  • Identify and evaluate workplace safety and health exposures involving manual material handling and ergonomics, machinery and equipment, falls, motor vehicles, and occupational disease.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of prospect and policyholder safety and health programs.
  • Identify complex engineering and administrative controls to reduce workers' compensation loss potential.
  • Use an evidence-based safety and health service approach to identify key trends and prioritize service needs for multi-location policyholders.
  • Develop safety and health service plans, perform ongoing consultation, and oversee the work of other safety and health staff servicing assigned accounts, making corrections as needed through influence and within regional protocols.
  • Ensure effective and cost-efficient service delivery to coordinated accounts.
  • Influence key policyholder decision-makers to implement safety and health recommendations.
  • Oversee the recommendations made by Safety & Health staff for assigned service accounts.
  • Prepare reports for policyholders and internal partners, including executive summaries and year-end reports.
  • Develop and conduct policyholder training to lead policyholder decision-makers toward organizational change and risk improvement.
  • Investigate serious workers' compensation incidents.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with policyholders and agencies.
  • Market Zenith and the Safety & Health department within a cross-functional marketing team.
  • Partner with regional and corporate Safety & Health leaders to improve service delivery and service account performance.
  • Meet department standards for individual work quality, productivity, and service timeliness.
  • Apply logical-thinking principles to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Participate in projects and perform other assigned duties.
