NASA's Roman Space Telescope launches with BAE Systems scientific instruments

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, equipped with scientific instruments built by BAE Systems. The company designed and developed the Opto-Mechanical Assembly on the Wide Field Instrument, the telescope's primary scientific instrument, which provides the stable structure and thermal environment needed for performance. The telescope's Wide Field Instrument offers a field of view at least 100 times greater than Hubble, allowing scientists to survey the sky up to 1,000 times faster. Roman will study billions of cosmic objects to explore how planets, stars and galaxies form and develop over time. BAE Systems has supported every NASA astrophysics flagship mission, including Hubble and the James Webb Space Telescope. The company is already contributing to NASA's next mission concept, the Habitable Worlds Observatory.

BAE Systems batteries power hybrid-electric flight demo at Farnborough Airshow

BAE Systems announced its advanced battery system powered the first flight test of GE Aerospace's hybrid-electric propulsion demonstrator at Farnborough International Airshow. The modified Saab 340 B test aircraft showcased potential for significant fuel savings and reduced emissions in commercial aviation. BAE Systems designed, developed, and integrated the complete battery energy storage system, including a battery management system using cutting-edge lithium-ion batteries. These provide more power without adding extra weight to the aircraft. "Our expertise in advanced battery technology and safety-critical battery management system design was crucial to enabling GE Aerospace to achieve this landmark moment," said Trudy Palmer, director of Airborne Power Systems at BAE Systems. The flight test marks a significant step towards commercialising hybrid-electric propulsion systems for narrow-body aircraft.
