Responsibilities
  • Own the solution for your area. You will take operational ownership for the success of GitHub’s Privacy and Data Governance initiatives, working in close collaboration with stakeholders to build the vision and execute on the program, ensuring that it aligns with regulatory requirements (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) as well as our overall strategy, and with our Microsoft counterparts. You will take a creative and strategic approach to solving complex data governance and privacy challenges, using sound judgment to make high-quality decisions even when faced with incomplete information or high ambiguity. You will ensure that data governance operations enable product teams to remain agile while maintaining high compliance standards.
  • Be an expert on GitHub product operations and have a comprehensive understanding of both the regulatory landscape and engineering principles. You will develop and maintain a deep understanding of the regulatory environment, staying informed about trends in privacy laws, data governance requirements, and compliance standards to evolve GitHub’s data governance strategy. You will serve as a key decision-maker for data governance policies, practices and standards.
  • Ensure compliance, regulatory alignment and manage risks. You will create and implement monitoring systems to ensure data integrity and security. Be ready to incorporate new information and requirements on a regular basis, and guide Product, Engineering, Design and other teams through any ambiguity. You will lead risk assessments and audits, and establish effective controls to mitigate data governance risks.
  • Collaborate across teams. You will drive changes that impact multiple organizations thoughtfully while also keeping all stakeholders aligned. You will play a critical role creating alignment between Product teams, Privacy, Legal, Microsoft’s Data Governance Foundation and Engineering teams, and the wider GitHub organization. We win or lose as a team.
  • Communicate effectively and proactively. You will communicate with the team, leadership, and key stakeholders frequently and effectively, often serving as the primary liaison between product, legal and engineering teams to ensure that all privacy and data governance policies are both aligned with regulatory requirements, are well-understood and consistently implemented across the organization. You will clearly, concisely, and assertively articulate the problems being solved, the roadmap, its benefits and tradeoffs, and serve as a role model for collaboration and creating alignment across teams.
  • Measure success. Own the measures used to define success for your area. You will define the key performance indicators (KPIs) for measuring the success of data governance initiatives, ensuring these metrics reflect both compliance and business outcomes. You’ll make measures visible to all stakeholders and interpret them into actionable conclusions and new hypotheses.
