Requirements
  • Completion of the ACG Claim Representative Training Program or equivalent knowledge or experience.
  • Eligibility to acquire a state adjuster's license within 90 days of hire in states where one is required, and maintain the license as specified.
  • A valid state driver's license.
  • Three years of experience or equivalent training in negotiating claim settlements, securing and evaluating evidence, preparing manual and electronic estimates, handling subrogation claims, resolving coverage questions, taking statements, and establishing clear evaluation and resolution plans for claims.
  • Advanced knowledge of the Essential Insurance Act in Michigan, the Fair Trade Practices Act as it relates to claims, subrogation procedures and processes, intercompany arbitration, simple litigation, and building construction and repair techniques.
  • Ability to handle claims according to Claim Handling Standards and apply ACG Claim policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Ability to work within assigned ACG Claim systems, including basic personal computer software.
  • Ability to perform basic claim file reviews and investigations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with insureds and claimants while responding to their questions and concerns.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems while making sound decisions.
  • Ability to prioritize claim-related functions and process time-sensitive information from multiple sources.
  • Ability to manage time and organize and plan workload and responsibilities.
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle to visit repair facilities, homes for inspections, and other locations.
  • Ability to research, analyze, and interpret subrogation laws in various states.
  • Ability to travel outside the assigned territory, including overnight stays when necessary.
  • Ability to relocate and work evenings or weekends.
Responsibilities
  • Review assigned claims.
  • Contact insureds and other affected parties.
  • Set expectations for the remainder of the claim process and initiate documentation in the claim handling system.
  • Complete complex coverage analysis.
  • Identify all applicable policyholder benefits.
  • Create additional sub-claims when needed.
  • Investigate claim facts to determine whether claims should be paid, applicable limits or exclusions, and recovery potential.
  • Review damages and determine the applicability of state law and other claim-related factors.
  • Evaluate the financial value of losses.
  • Approve payments for appropriate parties.
  • Refer claims to Underwriting, Recovery Units, or the Claims Special Investigation Unit when necessary.
  • Document and code claim files and complete claim closure activities in the assigned claims management system.
  • Negotiate claim settlements.
  • Handle Homeowner/CAT claims above the applicable value thresholds.
  • Investigate claims requiring in-depth coverage analysis.
  • Prepare damage estimates using claims software for field claims.
  • Review estimates for accuracy.
  • Monitor contractor repair status when applicable.
  • Assist the Claim Manager with file reviews and training when requested.
  • Conduct on-site inspections and travel to field locations as necessary.
Desired Qualifications
  • An associate degree in Business Administration, Insurance, claims, or management, or equivalent related work experience.
  • Completion of the Insurance Institute of America's General Insurance Program.
  • CPCU coursework or designation.
  • Xactware training.
  • One to two years of full-cycle homeowners claims-handling experience.
  • Experience handling personal property and additional living expense claims.
  • Experience with internal water loss, fire, and smoke claims.
  • Ability to walk on roofs.
  • Ability to climb ladders.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
