Requirements
  • Advanced knowledge of construction practices and methodology.
  • Progressive knowledge of surveying, staking procedures, checking line and grade, and cross sections.
  • Understanding and knowledge of testing procedures.
  • Ability to interpret and understand plans and specifications.
  • Ability to lead, manage, train, and mentor others.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and technical software, with the ability to learn CPM and Newforma software programs.
  • Ability to pass safety classes and required client certification exams.
  • Good mathematics skills, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and calculate areas, distances, and volumes.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Technical writing skills, including appropriate grammar and proofreading.
  • Effective human relations skills to build consensus, resolve conflict, and address design compliance issues with contractors.
  • Ability to embrace new technology and processes.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 10 years of construction, surveying, and/or field observation experience, including at least 5 years as a project lead.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience and knowledge of materials testing.
  • A valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • Ability to pass and maintain certifications required for work assignments.
  • Ability to pass a Department of Transportation Federal Railroad Administration drug test and background check.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements, including lifting and carrying testing equipment and tools, navigating difficult terrain, and standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, crawling, and balancing for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather and nature elements, work extensive walking assignments, operate devices and equipment including an all-terrain vehicle, and work contractor-dictated shifts that can include 12–15-hour days.
  • Ability to pass a post-offer, pre-employment lifting test.
Responsibilities
  • Perform general and advanced construction and field observation.
  • Read and interpret construction plans and specifications for quality assurance during construction.
  • Use knowledge of surveying, staking procedures, checking line and grade, and cross sections to perform quality assurance reviews.
  • Conduct materials testing following prescribed procedures on soil, concrete, bituminous, and aggregate materials.
  • Maintain logs of materials testing results.
  • Measure installed quantities and track and report installed products, including calculating areas, distances, and volumes.
  • Work directly with internal and external clients and contractors.
  • Write documentation for as-built drawings when design adjustments are made.
  • Complete detailed construction reports using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and construction management software systems.
  • Monitor contractor performance and address design compliance issues with contractors when identified.
  • Assist with training and scheduling staff.
  • Assist in establishing budgets and preparing and presenting proposals.
  • Perform submittal control reviews for client billing.
  • Travel in a company or personal vehicle to project sites, stay near project sites during the work week, and perform required overnight travel.
  • Obtain appropriate certifications for work assignments and maintain those certifications throughout employment.
Desired Qualifications
  • A two-year degree from a technical school or college, or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge or experience with AutoCAD or ArcGIS.
