Requirements
  • Knowledge of the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act law, including its rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of health insurance plans including health maintenance organizations, preferred provider organizations, commercial plans, managed care, standard Medi-Cal, Medicare, and workers' compensation.
  • Ability to obtain authorizations from insurance plans.
  • Ability to determine insurance requirements for outpatient services and obtain benefit and eligibility information.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form, with legible, concise, and understandable communication.
Responsibilities
  • Collect accurate and complete demographic and billing data during registration and complete registrations in a timely manner.
  • Complete and accurately process registration forms, including Conditions of Admission, advance directives, patient rights, HIPAA and Notices of Privacy Practices, Medicare Important Messages, Medicare Outpatient Observation Notices, and non-Medicare Outpatient Observation Notices.
  • Coordinate with patients who cannot sign at registration or admission and obtain signatures on a second attempt when needed.
  • Check the appropriate boxes for advance directives and Notices of Privacy Practices.
  • Determine insurance requirements for outpatient services and answer basic billing questions or refer patients to a financial advisor when the questions are outside the role's scope.
  • Troubleshoot insurance issues for patients.
  • Contact insurance providers to obtain benefit and service-eligibility information, document it in patient accounts, and communicate it to clinical staff.
  • Answer phones professionally, provide information and directions to physicians, staff, and the public, and transfer calls to the appropriate department.
  • Participate in problem solving to support revenue targets and customer satisfaction.
  • Keep forms and supplies stocked and reorder them when necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
