Summary

The British Columbia Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU) is the provincial resource for evidence-based information and treatment guidance in the field of addiction. The BCCSU plays an advocacy role for positive and public policy change, reducing stigma, and supporting patients and their families. The BCCSU is committed to conducting and translating leading-edge research into improved addiction care across BC. The BCCSU develops training curricula, program standards, and practice guidelines for delivery throughout BC. The BCCSU builds collaborative networks across regional health authorities, researchers, educators, and care providers, and other allied care professionals across the province to ensure that research and innovation efficiently reach the people they are intended to serve. The administrative core of BCCSU is accountable for enabling the research, translation and practice of the organization through timely, innovative and sound management services. The BCCSU values and respects all members of its communities, each of whom individually and collaboratively contribute to transforming care, education, training, and research in this area.The Providence Health Care Road to Recovery initiative strives to better address treatment of substance use issues by providing the right support to each client at the right time. Launched in 2023, the Road to Recovery supports clients at every phase of their wellness and recovery journey by coordinating seamless care, even if there are setbacks or relapses along the way. The Road to Recovery services in operation today include 25 detox beds located at St. Paul's Hospital, 20 transitional care beds for clients awaiting space in a treatment program or long-term housing, and the Road to Recovery Aftercare Team, which launched in Fall 2024, providing outreach aftercare in the community. The initiative is rolling out in steps, with additional treatment services to come soon. Acute beds at the current hospital will transition to the new St. Paul's Hospital when it opens in 2027.Reporting to the Program Manager, Research Projects, BCCSU, the Research Project Manager, BCCSU is responsible for the day to day management and support of all project aspects for the research program under the direction of the PI. This includes planning, supporting the successful implementation of clinical and observational research initiatives, grant facilitation, and building relationships with key stakeholders as required. Acts as the primary point of contact, facilitates onboarding and training and provides work direction to research staff. The Research Project Manager assists with the successful delivery of activities for the PI ensuring timelines and deliverables are met. Working with the PI and the Program Manager, Research Projects, the Research Project Manager will support with the development of the program implementation plan, workplans, funding proposals, manuscripts, research protocols, standard operational procedures and knowledge translation activities.

Here's What You'll Do:

• Coordinate the day-to-day operations of the Road to Recovery (R2R) program evaluation at Providence Health Care
• Keep research and quality improvement activities organized, on track, and aligned with project timelines and deliverables
• Coordinate quantitative and qualitative data collection, ensuring high-quality and consistent data collection practices
• Provide day-to-day guidance and support to evaluation staff, students, and trainees involved in data collection and project activities
• Collaborate with researchers, clinicians, community partners, and R2R clinical and operational teams to advance evaluation activities
• Support research outputs, including reports, presentations, publications, and other knowledge-sharing activities
• Ensure evaluation activities comply with UBC Ethics, PHC Privacy, and other relevant regulatory and oversight requirements
• Collaborate with the Indigenous Wellness and Reconciliation team, PHC Data Analytics, BCCSU Data Team, and other internal and external partners
• Identify and implement opportunities to improve project workflows, processes, and evaluation operations
• Contribute to generating meaningful evidence about the impact of R2R on patients and supporting continuous program improvement

What You Bring

Education, Training and Experience:

• Master’s Degree or equivalent in Health Sciences, Health Administration, Epidemiology, Public Health, Public Policy or related field preferred.
• Minimum of three (3) years recent, related experience in project management in a demanding academic, clinical healthcare setting.
• Knowledge and/or experience working in addiction, public health, infectious disease, health services and with vulnerable populations an asset.
• Training in project management, evaluation, Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP), Tri council Policy statement on the Ethical Conduct for Research with Human Subjects (TCPS2).
• Experience in organizing, coordinating, and managing research projects and/or grant-based programs and supervising data collection activities.
• Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology, developing research questionnaires, reviewing and collecting data from charts and maintaining related records.
• Experience with knowledge translation and ability to convey both research and evaluation findings and medical concepts to a range of audiences.

Skills and Abilities:

• Demonstrated understanding of the academic research process acquired through both practical and/or academic experience, including research ethics applications, funding applications, manuscript preparation, and presentations. Understanding of general research practices and procedures.
• Strong understanding of randomized controlled trials, epidemiologic/observational studies and research principles, and experience in interpreting randomized controlled trial and epidemiologic data.
• Ability to work and learn independently with minimal supervision and ability to collaborate in a larger team.
• Strong interpersonal and written communication skills within a complex interdisciplinary environment.
• Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment under deadlines.
• Excellent project organization, implementation, and networking skills.
• Comprehensive understanding of, and sensitivity to, diversity issues.
• Research skills, with an ability to analyze results.
• Computer literacy including experience in Microsoft Office suite, reference management tools (e.g., EndNote), and electronic data capture (e.g., REDCap).

• Organization, planning and analytical skills, and meticulous attention to detail.
• Ability to work effectively under time pressure to meet deadlines, multi-task, and resolve problems in a timely manner.

Your Day To Day:

• Manages the various Program’s research projects (e.g., clinical, observational, qualitative) planning and implementation activities including supporting protocol development and amendments, preparation of operational documentation, development of communication plans, management of timelines and resources, production of deliverables, and knowledge translation activities.
• Develops, maintains, and reports on project timelines, milestones, and performance indicators, liaising with investigators, study sites, and internal departments to monitor progress and resolve issues.
• Plans and facilitates screening, onboarding, and training of evaluation staff, interns, and other staff that may work on the research projects.
• Serves as the primary point of contact for research staff through regular group and individual meetings, delegating tasks and assignments, professional development, and performance evaluation in alignment with program goals.
• Oversees daily activities of primary and secondary clinical and observational research staff on assigned projects including adequate and required training, compliance with study protocol and in accordance with Tri council Policy statement on the Ethical Conduct for Research with Human Subjects (TCPS2)/Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP) and all other regulatory guidelines.
• Ensures effective project plans are in place and operational for the various research projects. Works proactively with the Program Manager, Research Projects and the PI, Observational and Clinical Research Managers to assist with setting priorities in accordance with applicable program plans, and organizational standard operational procedures (SOPs), TCPS-2/ICH-GCP guidelines and regulatory requirements.
• Identifies areas of concern and escalates to the Program Manager, Research Projects as needed.
• Updates regulatory study documents as needed (Ethics or Privacy Impact Assessment).
• Supports the Program Manager, Research Projects with managing program funding including processing invoices, maintaining study bank accounts, financial record keeping, grant close out and reconciliations.
• Facilitates and maintains workflows related to the review of study outputs by relevant parties (e.g. government, IWR, PopData, etc.).
• Oversees database management via auditing of data entry processes and accuracy checking.
• Assists with data access requests, funding proposals, manuscripts, research protocols, implementation of research and other public health initiatives and projects, including but not limited to scientific and policy research, demographic studies, and program evaluation.
• Supports the logistics of rapid program growth including planning, tracking, and minimizing risks associated with multi-site recruitment.
• Assists with the development and establishment of research-based public policy and program evaluation recommendations.
• Engages in the development of knowledge translation materials and strategies for dissemination and implementation of program outcomes, including peer review journals, policy reports, and infographics.
• Responds to information requests and coordinates communication of responses with various departments within the organization.
• Establishes positive working relationships and partnerships with a diverse set of stakeholders including clinical staff and people who use substances.
• Maintains professional development in research techniques and social and policy issues affecting people who use substances in order to integrate current evidence and knowledge into research efforts.
• Contributes to annual progress reports to funding agencies, donors, or other stakeholders and ongoing documentation of projects as needed.
• Liaises and engages with BCCSU staff when necessary to ensure that projects are implemented in alignment with BCCSU initiatives.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
