Requirements
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to instruct and encourage groups or individuals in exercise activities.
  • Ability to demonstrate exercise techniques and proper form, explain corrective measures, and teach proper breathing techniques.
  • Ability to evaluate participants' abilities, needs, and physical conditions and develop suitable training programs.
  • Ability to monitor participants' progress and adapt programs as needed.
  • Ability to explain and enforce exercise room and equipment safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to teach and demonstrate the use of fitness equipment, including machines and weights, according to established guidelines.
  • Ability to maintain equipment inventories and monitor equipment maintenance needs.
  • Ability to collect participant information, forms, and documentation required for exercise participation.
  • Ability to follow established organizational, safety, and applicable federal, state, and local policies and regulations.
Responsibilities
  • Lead a fitness program for a senior living community serving memory care and independent living residents.
  • Develop a monthly schedule of fitness classes for residents.
  • Observe participants and monitor their safety during activities.
  • Instruct participants on maintaining exertion levels to maximize exercise benefits.
  • Offer sitting and standing alternatives to accommodate different participation levels.
  • Plan routines, select appropriate music, and choose movements for each muscle group based on participants' capabilities.
  • Provide residents with information and resources regarding healthy nutrition and lifestyle.
  • Plan physical education programs that promote participants' physical attributes and social skills.
  • Promote fitness center use and participation in fitness activities.
  • Assist with fitness education opportunities within the community.
  • Promote fitness and wellness through newsletters, calendars, and television monitors.
  • Monitor the wellness center and fitness room for cleanliness and organization.
  • Attend appropriate meetings and training opportunities to remain informed about current information and skills.
  • Pursue continuing education by learning new fitness classes of interest to residents, such as Tai Chi, yoga, and balance classes.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certification by the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Council on Exercise, the Senior Fitness Association, or the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America.
  • An Associate's Degree in a related field.
  • Previous experience working with mature adults in a health and fitness capacity.
  • Previous experience successfully leading individual and group exercise classes, including endurance, strength, and flexibility classes.
