We are now looking for a full-stack Software Engineer with extensive experience delivering high-quality code quickly, breaking down complex technical challenges into manageable tasks, and proactively unblocking team members to keep progress on track.

As a Software Engineer at Focaldata, you will:

• Deliver High-Standard Code: Develop clean, efficient, and maintainable code that meets the highest standards and prioritises simplicity over cleverness.
• Hold your opinions loosely: We are a small team with a single goal - to build an incredible piece of next generation software. We aren’t precious about opinions and we need to be flexible to be able to work in whichever way gets the job done.
• Decompose Complex Tech Challenges: Break down higher level less ambiguous technical requirements into manageable deliverable chunks of work. You will be expected to take on work that isn’t always broken down ticket by ticket.
• Take an active role leading from within the team proactively finding the most important things to work on, unblocking your team mates and taking responsibility for finding and raising any issues to the engineering leads.
• Champion Quality & Best Practices: Operate in a startup tech team environment that is growing to the next level, and champion best practices to ensure scalability and maintainability. This is still important even when working in a fast and scrappy start up.
• Go where you're needed: We're a small startup engineering team and while we have specific needs, there will also be times when you'll need to contribute to a wide range of different software engineering work.

Who you are

Essential

• 3+ years of software engineering experience as a full-stack developer In Python
• Experience building and maintaining complex web-based systems
• DevOps experience including CI/CD pipelines, container orchestration, and cloud infrastructure (we use GCP, Kubernetes, Terraform)
• Solid understanding of software design patterns, architecture principles, and best practices
• Experience working in agile teams and contributing to the full software development lifecycle
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
• Strong problem-solving focus: A laser-like focus on identifying and solving critical path issues

Nice-to-Have

• Experience with AI particularly the composition of agentic LLM systems
• Experience with Typescript+React
• Experience with frontend state management tools such as Apollo / Context / Redux
• Background in data processing or analytics platforms
• Experience in mentoring junior developers, helping them grow and ensuring adherence to best practices

Please note that our team is required to be in the office three days a week Tuesday - Thursday.
