Moderna develops medicines built on messenger RNA (mRNA). Its products use mRNA delivered into cells to instruct them to produce specific proteins that can prevent or treat disease, with vaccines being a primary example. In practice, a dose delivers engineered mRNA into the body, cells translate it into a target protein, and the immune system responds or the protein modulates biology to combat disease. Moderna differentiates itself through its focus on building a whole mRNA medicines platform and in-house capabilities for designing, manufacturing, and scaling mRNA therapies, including rapid development and large-scale production. Its goal is to create a new category of medicines based on mRNA that can improve how diseases are discovered, developed, and treated, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

Moderna stocks fell 24% after cancer vaccine surge, analysts await ESMO data.

Moderna stocks fell 24% after cancer vaccine surge, analysts await ESMO data. 2026-08-21 05:22:40 Key takeaways. * Moderna stock fell 24% to $133.32 on Thursday after surging 177% Wednesday on positive Phase 3 cancer vaccine results. * The decline erased $15.8 billion in market value as analysts issued price targets ranging from $60 to $170. * Full intismeran dataset will be presented at ESMO congress October 23-27 when hazard ratio becomes public. Moderna fell about 24% to $133.32 on Thursday, according to on-chain data, giving back a large portion of its historic 177% surge the prior day following the first positive Phase 3 result for an mRNA cancer vaccine. The stock steadied in Friday's pre-market, trading slightly higher around $134. The pullback reflected profit-taking and the absence of a disclosed hazard ratio in the clinical announcement, not a reversal of the breakthrough's significance. Even after Thursday's decline, Moderna remained up more than 110% for the week and over 300% for the year, as the market recalibrated the size of Wednesday's move while preserving the re-rating that lifted the company out of its post-Covid valuation slump. Moderna erased $15.8 billion in market value on Thursday. Thursday's decline erased roughly $15.8 billion of Moderna's market value, cutting it to about $51.5 billion, though approximately $28.7 billion of Wednesday's gain remained. In percentage terms, about a quarter of the surge came off. The move rippled through partner and peer names that had rallied in sympathy the day before: partner Merck slipped about 2% and BioNTech fell about 2% in Friday pre-market trading, giving back part of their own breakthrough-day gains. The combination of a sharp drop that still leaves the stock enormously higher than a week ago characterizes the pullback. The surge overshot, and traders who rode it took profits, but the re-rating that lifted Moderna out of its post-Covid slump has largely held. Analyst price targets ranged from $60 to $170 after readout. Analysts responded to the data with upgrades, yet most new price targets landed below where the stock was trading. Bank of America and Jefferies upgraded to Neutral with the Street-high target of $170, calling the result a watershed moment. Morgan Stanley moved to $89, Goldman to $120, RBC to $130, UBS to $150, and Citi sat at the low end at $60. The consensus settled around $85. Of the post-readout calls, only Bank of America's $170 topped Wednesday's closing price. The upgrades were real and the science convinced Wall Street, but they doubled as a warning that the one-day move had run ahead of even the more bullish revised valuations. Four of the six post-readout targets sit below the current price. JPMorgan analyst Jessica Fye told Yahoo Finance that the melanoma win was largely expected. She wrote that with Moderna already valued near $25 billion before the news, and melanoma success already modeled at an 85% probability, the readout itself could add approximately 3% to valuation, and that the firm sees the read-across to other indications as critical. In other words, melanoma alone never justified a doubling; the entire bull case rests on the platform working elsewhere. Moderna withheld hazard ratio and p-value in Phase 3 announcement. The reason the targets vary so widely is that the companies gave the market a result without its magnitude. The Phase 3 announcement said the combination produced statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in recurrence-free and distant metastasis-free survival, but it disclosed no hazard ratio and no p-value, so the actual size of the benefit is still unknown. That single gap is why a genuine breakthrough could still leave analysts $110 apart on price. Moderna now trades between the surge peak and the Street's roughly $85 consensus, which means the coming data, not last week's tape, will settle who is right. The company posted a $782 million net loss last quarter on revenue down 28% year over year, so the valuation already assumes years of successful execution. Full dataset expected at ESMO congress October 23-27. The verdict comes at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) congress in Madrid, October 23-27, where Moderna and Merck are expected to present the full intismeran dataset. That is when the hazard ratio finally becomes public. Analysts have already set the bar: Jefferies said it expects a recurrence-free-survival hazard ratio below 0.80, with a reading below 0.70 needed to reinforce confidence, against the 0.561 seen in the earlier Phase 2 study. A strong number would validate the surge, while a soft one would vindicate the pullback. Beyond melanoma, the platform's nine-trial program across lung, bladder, and kidney cancers is the longer arc that determines whether this is a single win or a franchise. Faq. Why did Moderna stocks fall 24% on Thursday after surging 177% the day before? Moderna fell about 24% to $133.32 on Thursday due to profit-taking after the historic 177% surge and because the Phase 3 announcement disclosed no hazard ratio or p-value, leaving the actual size of the clinical benefit unknown. JPMorgan noted that melanoma success was already modeled at an 85% probability, so the readout alone could add only approximately 3% to valuation. What are analysts waiting for in Moderna's cancer vaccine data? Analysts are waiting for the full intismeran dataset to be presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) congress in Madrid, October 23-27, when the hazard ratio will become public. Jefferies expects a recurrence-free-survival hazard ratio below 0.80, with a reading below 0.70 needed to reinforce confidence, against the 0.561 seen in the earlier Phase 2 study. What is the range of analyst price targets for Moderna stocks after the cancer vaccine readout? Analyst price targets after the readout ranged from $60 (Citi) to $170 (Bank of America and Jefferies), with a consensus around $85. Of the post-readout calls, only Bank of America's $170 topped Wednesday's closing price, meaning four of the six targets sit below the current price around $133-134. Musk backs mRNA potential as Moderna and Merck trial shows cancer vaccine breakthrough

Elon Musk said mRNA technology has "tremendous promise for curing diseases" despite what he termed its "obvious misuse during Covid". The Tesla chief executive officer suggested artificial RNA essentially makes curing diseases a software problem. Musk's comments came as Moderna and Merck announced positive Phase 3 results for an individualised mRNA cancer vaccine. The treatment showed significant improvement in recurrence-free and metastasis-free survival in melanoma patients when combined with Merck's Keytruda. This marks the first successful late-stage trial of its kind. Musk has previously promoted artificial intelligence as a path to transforming healthcare. In June, he said advances in synthetic RNA could potentially "cure almost anything".

Moderna shares nearly triple on skin cancer vaccine success.

Moderna shares nearly triple on skin cancer vaccine success. By Patrick Temple-West in New York and Stefania Palma in London Drugmaker's melanoma shot developed with Merck delivers positive outcome in late-stage trial. Shares in US vaccine maker Moderna nearly tripled after the company reported successful trial results for an experimental skin cancer therapy. The experimental therapy, jointly developed with Merck, would be unprecedented in cancer treatment, providing a custom-made vaccine for each patient depending on their specific tumours. Analysts expect US regulatory approval next year. "Today's results represent a landmark moment for adjuvant melanoma treatment," said Professor Georgina Long, the study's principal investigator and medical director of Melanoma Institute Australia. The results of the trial boosted Moderna's share price by 177 per cent in New York, adding $44bn to its market capitalisation and taking it to $69.6bn. With its share price surge, Moderna became the second-best performer in the S&P 500 index so far in 2026, trailing only memory group Sandisk. The Massachusetts-based company has been a leader in messenger RNA technology (mRNA), which teaches the body's immune system to identify and attack illnesses such as Covid-19. Moderna is hoping to develop the experimental vaccine technology to treat different types and stages of cancer. It hailed the results as an important milestone towards vaccinating patients with the disease. The company's mRNA cancer shot would be given to a patient who has already been diagnosed with melanoma and is designed specifically to attack their tumour. "We have started to demonstrate the potential of an entirely new class of medicine - and an entirely new way of thinking about cancer care: using the information encoded within an individual patient's cancer to design a specific therapy that helps train their immune system to fight it," Stéphane Bancel, Moderna's chief executive, wrote in a blog post on Wednesday. Moderna and Merck said the treatment was the "first and only" combined therapy that showed "statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements" in stopping cancer from redeveloping and spreading in patients whose melanomas had been removed. The regimen involved Moderna's mRNA vaccine and Merck's medication, Keytruda. Moderna became a corporate hero during the pandemic as it rushed to develop a vaccine against Covid. But its fortunes have since turned as it faces weaker demand for the jab. Last year it became the most shorted stock in the S&P 500. The group has bet on new cancer vaccines to drive a turnaround and has been working for years on the vaccine alongside Merck. Even with Wednesday's sharp share price rise, Moderna would still be trading at less than a third of its 2021 peak after it launched its Covid vaccine. Shares in fellow US drugmaker Merck rose 12.6 per cent in early afternoon trading to hit an all-time high. Germany-based BioNTech, another leader in mRNA, saw its shares jump 21.6 per cent after Moderna's report. "This is a landmark moment," analysts at TD Cowen said in a report. The shot is expected to win regulatory approval next year and quickly be sold to patients, they said. Moderna has also been building out its manufacturing to prepare for additional vaccine production, including buying a new facility in Massachusetts in 2023.

Moderna soars 402% as FDA approves flu vaccine and cancer treatment shows promise

Moderna's shares have surged 402% this year, driven by clinical and regulatory breakthroughs. On 5 August, the FDA approved mFLUSIVA, the company's flu vaccine, which proved more effective than existing options in clinical trials. More significantly, on 19 August, Moderna reported strong phase 3 results for intismeran autogene, its personalised cancer vaccine. When combined with Keytruda in advanced melanoma patients, it meaningfully improved recurrence-free survival. The shares soared over 100% on this news. The cancer vaccine success validates Moderna's mRNA platform beyond COVID-19 applications. Intismeran autogene is being investigated for other cancers, including non-small cell lung cancer, and is developed in partnership with Merck. Moderna maintains a deep pipeline across infectious diseases and oncology.

Merck dips 0.5% after 12.6% surge on positive cancer-vaccine trial results

Merck shares dipped approximately 0.5% to $151.39 on Thursday following a 12.6% surge the previous day, reaching a record close. The pharmaceutical company's stock jumped after positive results from a Phase 3 trial testing a personalized melanoma vaccine developed with Moderna. The 1,137-patient study met its primary endpoints for recurrence-free survival and distant-metastasis-free survival. The trial compared Keytruda alone against Keytruda plus intismeran in patients with surgically removed high-risk melanoma, with no new safety concerns identified. Merck and Moderna are also testing the vaccine platform in lung, bladder, kidney, pancreatic and stomach cancers. Keytruda generated approximately $8.4 billion in second-quarter sales, representing roughly half of Merck's revenue. The stock now trades 26.28% above its estimated fair value of $119.88.
